Susan Seaforth Hayes has been playing beloved Julie Horton Williams for 50 years on Days of Our Lives! Now, the show is honoring the star with a very special episode in celebration of her golden anniversary as Julie looks back on her life in Salem.
What some DAYS fans may not know is that Seaforth Hayes was not the first actress cast in the part. William J. Bell, DAYS’ former head writer, wanted to find just the right actress to bring Julie to life.
After she was hired, following a knockout audition, the actress asked Bell why he hired her. “He said, ‘I liked your smile,'” Seaforth Hayes recalls. Here’s a look back at five of Seaforth Hayes’ most memorable storylines as Julie!
The Look Of Love
Susan Martin (Denise Alexander) hired Doug Williams (Bill Hayes) to romance Julie, but the plan backfired when the two fell in love. Following the death of Bill’s wife Addie (Patricia Barry), who was also Julie’s mom, Doug and Julie finally got together.
There’s so much romance with this pair they have not one, but two love songs: The Look of Love and The Most Beautiful Girl in the World. Hayes and Seaforth wed in real life in 1974; they tied the knot onscreen in 1976.
A Traumatic Tale
Bad guy Larry Atwood (Fred Bier) raped Julie, causing her to push everyone away, including Doug.
After Julie confided in Doug what had happened, Larry turned up dead! She stood trial for his murder and his attack upon her became public knowledge. Julie was cleared after Larry’s assistant confessed to the crime.
Burned in a fire after Maggie’s (Suzanne Rogers) oven exploded, Julie was left with a horrible facial scar. Believing that she needed to divorce Doug so he could be happy, Julie went to Mexico and got a divorce.
