It’s “I Do” take three for Steve and Kayla, who promise to love, honor and cherish one another, again, on Days of Our Lives.
The timing for the romantic occasion is as romantic as it gets — Valentine’s Day. Well, to be technical, February 15, due to a pre-emption that pushed back the episode.
Love And Appreciation
Actors Stephen Nichols (Steve) and Mary Beth Evans (Kayla) believe this wedding is significant for their TV couple, who tied the knot in 1988 and 1990, before ultimately divorcing in 2012. (Let’s not forget Steve was also presumed dead for well over a decade.)
“Our characters are just so much more mature,” says Evans. “It’s not just happily ever after, this time. It’s more complicated and important.”
“They can appreciate what this union means now,” adds Nichols, “because of everything they’ve been through.”
A Special Guest
Evans describes the wedding as “really sweet and honest and true to life,” adding that Steve and Kayla “are surrounded by family and friends and feel really loved.” Among that family, is the pair’s daughter Stephanie (actress Shelly Hennig), who returns for the ceremony.
As for Kayla’s dress, Evans notes that it’s “more now. I don’t want to say more casual, because it’s not. It’s just not a ball gown. It’s more who Kayla is now.”
All About the Words
Nichols and Evans realized the couple’s vows were a big part of their special day, so they worked on them a lot.
“I told Mary Beth, ‘This is important. We have to make it the best it can be. We have to really work on it,’” recounts Nichols. “What we said to each other needed to be very clear.”
“We were really committed to our characters and this couple. We wanted to make sure, if we felt something was left out, that we covered it,” adds Evans, noting that she and Nichols did get to tweak their dialogue “a little. We just made it really connect with us and our characters. We also have such a history. We know these characters so well and where they are. Steve and Kayla have these life experiences as people. We wanted all that in there. We wanted all the layers of a long-term relationship.”
Fans Will Approve

Days of Our Lives and longtime Steve and Kayla fans will enjoy the final product. “For sure, without a doubt,” contends Nichols. “Because of what we say to each other.
“I mean, it’s not fireworks,” admits Evans. “It’s not over the top.”
“It’s about what we say to each other,” points out Nichols, again. “And how connected we are.”
Nichols and Evans also believe that their TV nuptials were shot really well. “We had a really good director that day,” explains Nichols. “He had some great ideas. The shots that he took and the decisions that he made about shooting at different angles weren’t your typical ones. It was very very different.”
“It wasn’t traditional either with just a bunch of people sitting in chairs,” chimes in Evans. “It was all done differently. We say that, but, of course, we don’t know what [the final product] is going to look like.”
Supercouple Resurgence
The fact that Nichols and Evans have been working together as a supercouple on and off since the mid-1980s means a lot to the two of them.
“It’s fantastic that now, 30 years later, we can still be doing that,” says Nichols. “I’m very grateful to have the opportunity and to still be [working] with my Mary Beth… my Sweetness.”
“It’s what the fans want, too,” adds Evans. “There’s a lot going on in the world, and people want to have an escape. They want to see love and romance.”
