Fan-favorite Stephen Schnetzer is known to soap viewers primarily for his long-running role as Cass on Another World, but his first daytime part was playing Julie’s brother Steven on Days of our Lives. Now, the actor can be seen as the lead in A Case of Blue, an independent feature film, and he talks with Soap Hub about it.
Stephen Schnetzer spoke about his new film and also his stint on DAYS, which ran from 1978-80. A Case of Blue asks the question — is it possible to relive a long-lost romance? Schnetzer plays the character of Richard Flicker, a retiree, who takes an art class where he encounters a model named Amelia (played by Annapurna Sriram, Billions), who is a lookalike of Richard’s past love.
“It’s not a mid-life crisis, but it is a life crisis,” Schnetzer says. “Dealing with a person in crisis was an interesting acting challenge for me. My character took a safe path and became an accountant. I’m always attracted to a role when a challenge presents itself to carry a story.”
Some involved with the film felt that Schnetzer played too young to bring Richard to life, but writer/director Dana H. Glazer wanted him for the part. “I’m not ready to be committed to a home [in real life], so it was a little bit wonky to have my character’s daughter and son-in-law talk about my character going to a home,” Schnetzer says. “I was also drawn to the parallel story of Richard’s current life and a first love.”
Watch for Richard to embark on a journey of the soul, enjoying once more a fountain of his youth only to learn that to escape one’s reality comes at a cost. A Case of Blue also features Tracy Shayne (Homeland) as Ellie, Richard’s wife, and Ken Baltin (The Equalizer 2) as Kenny, Richard’s best buddy.
“Linda says it’s the best thing she’s ever seen me do,” Schnetzer says of his former AW co-star Linda Dano (ex-Felicia; ex-Vivian, DAYS). “She is a dear friend and wouldn’t lie to me.” What would Schnetzer like people to learn from seeing the film? “That they’re not alone when times are tough or when there’s a loss of a loved one,” he says.
“Seeing Richard, who feels alone, may help people feel less alone when they’re struck by the loneliness of a loss. I’ve always wanted to connect with viewers in anything I’ve ever done. I want people to say, ‘Yeah, I relate to that.'”
Veteran DAYS fans recall Schnetzer as Julie’s (Susan Seaforth Hayes) brother Steven Olson, a bit of a rogue. “In one storyline, I embezzled money from Doug [Bill Hayes],” Schnetzer recalls. “Steven was a little shady. It took a while to get comfortable in front of the camera. Susan and Bill really held my hand.”
