Marcus Smythe who played Donna’s brother, Peter Love, on Another World has passed away following a three-year battle with brain cancer. He was 70.

Remembering Marcus Smythe

The actor’s death notice was posted on Legacy. Smythe was born on March 26, 1950, in Berea, Ohio to parents Patricia (Schweitzer) and Paul Smythe. His parents and a brother, Scott, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne Goddard, and two sons, Harrison and Duncan. Smythe is also survived by a brother, Casey, who resides in Tuscon, Ariz., in addition to nephews and nieces in Arizona and Kansas.

While perhaps best known to soap fans for his portrayal of domineering and manipulative Peter Love on Another World from 1985-87, Smythe also appeared on Search for Tomorrow as Dane Taylor from 1982-83, and on Guiding Light as Gordon Middleton in 1979.

“[W]ith heavy heart,” Hank Cheyne (ex-Scott, AW) posted on Facebook, “Marcus played my brother on Another World — he of the caustically incorrigible wit and charm, brimming with talent, a pro across the boards – the first mate I met on my very first day so full of life and love-life carries on— RIP Marcus.”

Cheyne’s wife, Missy Hughes (ex-Sara, AW) adds: “Whenever I think of Marcus I think of the Mets. He made anyone around him a Mets fan. He was a charmer. He will be sadly missed. Sending much love and prayers to his family. Xoxo 🙏❤️.”

“Marcus was so kind to me during a difficult story,” Sharon Gabet (ex-Raven, Edge of Night) shares with Soap Hub. “He played an abusive husband, Peter Love, to my character Brittany Love [on AW]. I was also pregnant at the time which made it rough to do the sometimes violent and highly emotional scenes. He would almost weep at the end of taping telling me how sorry he was that he had to say and do those things to me. May he rest in peace.”

More recently, Smythe appeared on Port Charles as Dean Eldridge. His credits include roles in Summer Solstice in 1981, which starred Henry Fonda and Myrna Loy, and in The Story Lady in 1991, which starred Jessica Tandy. Smythe received Drama Logue and L.A. Weekly Drama Awards for performances on the Los Angeles stage. He earned his B.A. from Otterbein University in 1972 and a Master of Fine Arts from Ohio University in 1975.

In lieu of floral tributes, Smythe’s family respectfully requests contributions be made to either a favorite charity or to a Democratic candidate in the upcoming election. Additionally, the Smythe family asks that everyone wear a mask during the pandemic. Soap Hub sends sincere condolences to Smythe’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.
