In the October 9 episode of Days of our Lives, Joy finally got what she wanted and moved into Alex’s apartment with Kelsey. Unfortunately for her, the wheelchair scam immediately became much harder to maintain once a crying baby entered the equation. Stephanie nearly walked in at the exact moment Joy abandoned the chair and stood up, proving that living under Alex’s roof may be the best thing for Joy’s plan or the fastest way to destroy it.

Key Takeaways

  • Joy officially moved into Alex’s apartment with Kelsey.
  • Joy continued using her fake paralysis to manipulate Alex and Kayla.
  • Stephanie was about to catch Joy standing when Kelsey started crying.

What Happened on DAYS

Joy (AlexAnn Hopkins) spent part of the day telling Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) how grateful she was that Alex (Robert Scott Wilson) was taking her and Kelsey in. She also leaned heavily on how difficult it was being stuck in a wheelchair and unable to properly care for her daughter, which would have been much more moving if she were actually paralyzed.

Kayla reminded her that Alex was a good man and that Stephanie (Abigail Klein) was lucky to have him, and Joy seemed to absorb that information with great interest. Alex later arrived to take Joy home, where she wasted no time nudging him into saying exactly what she wanted to hear.

She even had a black-and-white, 1950s sitcom fantasy of Alex carrying her across the threshold while they played happy family with Kelsey. Meanwhile, Alex and Stephanie shared a kiss in the hallway before he left, and Stephanie heard Kelsey crying inside.

Why It Matters

Joy wanted access to Alex, and now she has it. The problem is she also has to maintain a fake disability every minute she is around him, Stephanie, Kelsey, and anyone else who drops by. That became a problem almost immediately when Kelsey would not stop crying.

Joy struggled with the wheelchair rather than simply getting up, but eventually maternal instinct won. She stood, walked over to Kelsey, and started checking on her just as Stephanie cautiously opened the door, and we were left on that cliffhanger. For someone who spent weeks building this scheme, Joy may have blown the whole thing before she had unpacked.

The Fallout

If Stephanie saw enough, Joy could be in serious trouble. Even if she managed to sit down before Stephanie got a clear look, the close call shows how difficult it will be to sustain this arrangement. Every ordinary parenting emergency now comes with the risk that Joy forgets she is supposed to be unable to walk.

Joy may have gotten exactly where she wanted to be, but now she has made her own lie much harder to maintain. Living under Alex’s roof means more chances for Stephanie to walk in, Kelsey to need something, or Joy to react before she remembers she is supposed to be paralyzed.

If this first day is any indication, the wheelchair scam may collapse long before Joy gets the happy-family ending she has been fantasizing about.
