The DAYS recap for Monday, January 9, 2023, sees two innocents suffering the consequences of others’ actions.
In this episode, Kayla Johnson Brady (Mary Beth Evans) joined Kate Roberts Brady (Lauren Koslow) in the Upper Room, and Stephanie Johnson (Abigail Klein) was just a second or two too late to say her goodbyes. While the news of the women’s passing spread, Orpheus (George DelHoyo) “gifted” Lucas Horton (Bryan Dattilo) a world of hurt. Now, let’s dig a little deeper into what exactly happened.
Acutely aware that she was no longer long for this world, and having learned of Kate’s passing, Kayla desperately demanded time with her children. And while a face-to-face was preferable, she settled for speaking with Seattle-based Joey Johnson (Tanner Stine) and Tripp Johnson (Lucas Adams) over the telephone.

But where was Stephanie? Her beautiful, precious Stephanie? No matter. With her life ebbing away, Kayla announced that she was finally ready to “go to sleep,” to see her pop, her mom, and brother Bo (Peter Reckell) — won’t she be in for a major surprise?! — and all the others who had gone before her. At the very moment Kayla flatlined, Stephanie burst through the door.
Though Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn) had success in chasing down friend-cum-boss-cum-crush at the Kiriakis manse, his efforts were all for naught. But how, exactly, did Stephanie’s phone get turned off? Stephanie certainly didn’t remember doing it. Does Alexander Neil Kiriakis (Robert Scott Wilson) have any ideas? Why yes, yes he does, considering that it was he committed the deed…and all because he didn’t want Chad to interrupt his and Steph’s bout of lovemaking. He feels bad about it though, as one would.
Kate is gone, and Roman Brady (Josh Taylor) couldn’t be more devastated. Still, he did work overtime to put on a happy face when he visited his little sister and begged her to rally ’round. Afterward, it was back to mourning his momentous loss.
Rather than lay around and do nothing, Marlena Evans Black (Deidre Hall) busied herself with checking in on Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan). How has he been doing ever since the love of his life talked the mother of his unborn child into having an abortion? Turns out, not great.
Then again, Eric did have to admit that, despite his earlier assessment of the situation, Nicole Walker (Arianne Zucker) might not have been totally to blame for what happened between him and Jada Hunter (Elia Cantu) — yet he still can’t bring himself to forgive and forget.
Work on that, Marlena begged. She might not be around for much longer, and the last thing that she wants is for Eric to forever harden his beautiful, golden heart. He promises to try.
Operating under the theory that Orpheus might have tasked one of his contacts on the outside to steal the orchid, John Black (Drake Hogestyn) paid his old rival a visit and found himself thrust in the unenviable position(s) of having to referee Orpheus and Lucas and relay to Lucas that Kate was on death’s door.
Upon learning that Kate had indeed crossed the threshold, Lucas went in on Orpheus and branded him a monster. Would a real monster offer Lucas a consolation gift in the form of a bottle of Kentucky Whisky, wondered Orpheus. Yes, yes it would.
