The DAYS recap for Thursday, January 5, 2023, sees conditions taking a turn for the worse, both literally and figuratively.
In this episode, Kate Roberts Brady (Lauren Koslow), Kayla Brady Johnson (Mary Beth Evans), and Marlena Evans Black (Deidre Hall) begin their decline — and not for the first time. Elsewhere, Kristen DiMera (Stacy Haiduk) learns that it’s Brady Black (Eric Martsolf) who’s gotten the best of her, and Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan) is beautified by his unwitting hostage. Now, let’s dig a little deeper into what exactly happened.
A hangover Kate can deal with, but learning from Rex Brady (Kyle Lowder) that her latest round of blood tests indicates that the cure for what previously ailed and almost killed her is wearing off isn’t exactly how she pictured ringing in the new year. Still, there’s no reason to panic…yet. There could be other explanations…aside from the obvious.

If definitive answers are what everyone requires — and it very much is — then the next step would be to draw blood from Kayla and/or Marlena and see if those results jive with Kate’s. Enter Kayla at the opportune moment.
She submits to the tests posthaste, and much to everyone’s horror, it’s a carbon copy of Kate’s. Then the sneezing starts, and as everyone knows, that’s the herald of dark days indeed.
Prior to all metaphorical Hell breaking loose — and they’d know from Hell — Marlena and John Black (Drake Hogestyn) basked in their togetherness and set aside the appropriate amount of time to ponder Brady Black’s (Eric Martsolf) motivations for allowing Kristen back in again.
Is it possible that Kristen brainwashed Brady much the same way that she did Stefan O. DiMera (Brandon Barash)? Nah. If that were the case, Brady still wouldn’t seem so reticent. Whatever the case, the couple promised that they’d jump right on it…just as soon as they’d jumped on each other.
Despite knowing better, Brady made the rookie mistake of talking about his and Eric’s plan — to kidnap and ransom wee Rachel Black (Finley Rose Slater) for the lifesaving orchid that Kristen has been bogarting — quite loudly, in a public area, with his back to the only entrance and exit. In a surprise to absolutely no one, Kristen snuck up on him and heard every incriminating word.
A threat-filled back and forth ensued, and for the first time in a very long time, Kristen was the one with the least number of cards to play. It was either give up the orchid or never see her precious baby girl ever again. And Brady meant it. Oh, did he mean it.
So, off to the bowels of DiMera manse the exes traversed, and along the way, Brady excoriated himself for not checking Salem’s premiere hiding place. In a shock to absolutely no one except Kristen herself, the bulb was no longer in its dedicated spot!
All criminals must suffer for their crimes in some form or fashion, and Eric’s punishment consisted of having to deal with complaints queen Rachel — nothing is ever good enough for that child — and being forced to participate in a “make me over” challenge. It took some doing, but Rachel and Sloan Petersen (Jessica Serfaty) eventually got Eric all glammed up. He didn’t hate the final result. He didn’t love it either.
