The DAYS recap for Wednesday, January 4, 2023, sees a decision made to abandon a sinking, metaphorical, ship.
In this episode, Sarah Horton Cook (Linsey Godfrey) decides to ditch the last name and the husband that comes with it. Elsewhere, Gwen Rizczech (Emily O’Brien) worried that her goose was well and truly cooked, Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering) wondered if maybe he was the problem in his multitude of failed marriages, and Stephanie Johnson (Abigail Klein) put Alexander Neil Kiriakis (Robert Scott Wilson) in his place. Now, let’s dig a little deeper into what exactly happened.
Try as she might, Sarah just can’t imagine a world where she stays married to Xander Cook (Paul Telfer). After all, how does one remain with a spouse that they can no longer trust — and try as she might, Sarah just can’t imagine a world where she’ll ever trust Xander again. Try as she might, Maggie Horton Kiriakis (Suzanne Rogers) couldn’t convince her daughter otherwise.

Back at the roach motel where she’s been staying with Xander, Sarah made clear her intentions, but only after Xander further disillusioned her, intimating that she should lie to the police on his behalf or, at the very least, refuse to cooperate should it come to that. D’oh!
Try as she might, Gwen couldn’t quite wrap her head around what Leo Stark (Greg Rikaart) was saying. Something about Sarah going around to all and sundry accusing her of being Xander’s accomplice…and people actually buying what she’s saying…and the possibility of jail time staring her in the face…and she shouldn’t have anything to do with Xander ever again just in case? That’s all crazy talk! Except that it isn’t.
No, as soon as Rafe and Jada Hunter (Elia Cantu) were made privy to Sarah’s, Justin Kiriakis (Wally Kurth), and Bonnie Lockhart Kiriakis’s (Judi Evans) decided opinion — and that was that Gwen was up to her neck in this whole mess — they made a beeline to Horton House to try and persuade Gwen to rat out Xander. She politely declined. Jada and Rafe promised that they’d be back…real soon. Gwen gulped.
Speaking of Rafe…he got his hands on a copy of the divorce papers that Nicole Walker Soon-To-No-Longer-Be-Hernandez (Arianne Zucker) signed and became incredibly morose. Try as he might, he just couldn’t comprehend how yet another one of his marriages could end in such a catastrophic way. Try as she might, Jada couldn’t help but be stunned that Rafe had tried and failed not once, not twice, but thrice, to hold onto a wife.
Stephanie is woman, hear her roar. Try as she might, she couldn’t fathom how Alex thought it his place to warn Chad DiMera (Billy Flynn) away from her. Firstly, she knows that Chad doesn’t have any romantic feelings for her — though, actually, he totally does — she’s heard him say as much, and on more than one occasion. Secondly, it’s her duty as Chad’s good friend, and as Abigail Deveraux DiMera’s (Marci Miller) cousin, to get Chad through his funk. Thirdly, she likes hanging out with Chad and his kids and will continue to do so as long as the feeling lasts. Does Alex understand? Good.
