In the Days of our Lives recap for October 31, 2023, it’s Halloween night and spookables are running amok.
In addition, death and destruction reign, and nightmares serve to reveal many characters’ innermost fears. Now, let’s dig a little deeper into what happened.
At the abode they now share, Sloan (Jessica Serfaty) and Eric (Greg Vaughan) enjoyed a film starring the unstoppable, indefatigable reanimated dead. Well, Eric enjoyed it. Sloan was actually all, “Stupid zombies…blood and guts…bleh!”
Eric’s merriment was soon tempered by a phone call alerting him to the death of Mr. Doresy, a former parishioner. Sloan insisted on accompanying her bothered lover to the hospital — owing more to her fear of being left on her lonesome rather than a desire to be a good partner.

By the time the two of them arrived, the hospital appeared to be abandoned. And it was. Nearly. All that remained was Nicole (Arianne Zucker) and flesh-craving, mobile corpses!
The trio fled to a nearby room and barricaded themselves inside. Though it took her a hot minute, Sloan eventually accepted the situation for what it was. And it wasn’t good. The chances of them surviving were slim to none. The door wasn’t going to hold forever.
Nicole heaped the blame for their predicament on herself. She’d lied about a viral outbreak affecting the hospital months earlier and that had tempted fate. Really got under God’s skin.
Seeing how Eric appreciated Nicole’s radical honesty, Sloan tried it herself. “That baby that Nicole’s carrying, it’s not EJ’s. It’s yours.” Nicole and Eric were momentarily thrilled, then pissed, then resigned. And there was a matter far more pressing to attend to. Eric had been scratched by one of the rambling cadavers!
With no other option, Eric decided to end his life with some convenient sedatives — with Nicole’s help of course. She loves him enough to kill him. Unlike Sloan. No sooner had Eric succumbed than Nicole shot Sloan up with a lethal dose too. That’ll teach her! And the sweetest revenge? Nicole will always have Eric’s baby to remind her of the love that they shared.
Sloan awoke with a start atop Eric and feared he’d actually passed on. Unfounded! He was merely sleeping and dreaming his own strange dream. He couldn’t recall exactly what transpired, but he was famished.
Meanwhile, Holly (Ashley Puzemis) summoned Tate (Jamie Martin Mann) to the DiMera mansion and tasked him with dressing in costume and putting the fright to her so she could leap into Johnny’s (Carson Boatman) comforting embrace.
Unfortunately, a stranger with murderous intent infiltrated the estate — dressed in the same outfit provided to Tate — and began a terror campaign. First, they slashed Holly with a very real butcher’s knife. Then they snuffed Tate and Johnny.
But, who was the fiend beneath the mask? Why, it was Chanel (Raven Bowens)! If she couldn’t have Johnny to herself, then she was damn determined to make sure Holly couldn’t have him!
Awakening with a sudden startle, Holly found herself mere inches from her crush and his lady love — and they were getting pretty amorous. The stuff of literal nightmares indeed!
Across town, Paulina (Jackée Harry) was alerted to an escape from Bayview — the second one in as many months — before her apartment lost power. Once the lights had been restored, she found Abe (James Reynolds) slumped over, the victim of yet another vicious assault by a rolling pin.
This time his assailant was Whitley King (Kim Coles)…or was it? When Abe came to, he identified Whitley as the real Paulina and Paulina as the real Whitley. Which was crazy. Except Whitley is the wife in the wedding photographs, and Paulina’s the one in Bayview-issued jam-jams. And, suddenly the apartment was full of stuffed kitty cats.
Paulina eventually came round to discover that she’d dozed off before the television set, Abe still beside her. Everything was back to normal. Back to the before. Except for that plush pussy cat atop a nearby cabinet. How did that get there?!
Stephanie (Abigail Klein) had made her decision. She and Chad (Billy Flynn) aren’t meant to be together after all, so she broke up with him. But as a lovely parting gift, she was going to bring Abigail back to life.
Sure, it sounded crazy. Chad even said as much. But Stephanie insisted that her parents had long found the secrets to resurrection…and they’re all contained within the diary of a man named Gideon who lived in the 1800s and bore an uncanny resemblance to Steve (Stephen Nichols).
Way back when, he called his beloved Emily — who was a, pardon the pun, dead ringer for Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) — back from the brink and everything had worked out fine. Except that it hadn’t.
Steve rushed over with news that recently discovered pages revealed that a returned Emily was no longer her usual gentle self, but something else. Something rotten and murderous. If only he’d made it in time to stop Kayla and Stephanie from conjuring.
In no time flat, zombified Abigail (unseen to the audience, only Stephanie could see her) had crawled out of the grave and dispatched Patch and Sweetness (off-screen, naturally) and so traumatized Stephanie that she aimed a gun at Chad and fired! Phew! It was all a dream. A terrible, terrible dream. No more Pet Sematary before bedtime for Mr. DiMera!
