In the Days of our Lives recap for September 1, 2023, an amnesiac so enthralls Kayla and Marlena that their husbands are tasked with finding out exactly who he is.

Days of our Lives Recap Highlights

In addition, Paulina made her first major call as mayor, Steve gave Abe some tough love, Shawn endeavored to get back to normal, and Brady was hit with a blast from the past. Now, let’s dig a little deeper into what happened.

Days of our Lives Recap: Guess Who

Jada (Elia Cantu) and one Officer Silver had a case that they desperately needed Kayla’s (Mary Beth Evans) assistance with. An elderly gentleman was found walking the streets, battered and bruised, with no idea of what his actual name was. Despite John Doe not having much pizzaz to it, the mystery man agreed to answer to it for the time being.

Though a little worse for wear, it was clear that John Doe was a charmer. He had Jada and Officer Silver wrapped around his little finger, and make no mistake. Kayla was equally charmed, if not a little put out by her patient’s inability to recall basic details other than the year they were currently in — 2023, indeed. Scoff! Time jump? What time jump? — and that he was on “a very important mission.”

Enter psychiatrist extraordinaire Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) to lend her assistance. John Doe was a bit skeptical at first. After all, he’s not crazy — not even the least bit neurotic. But when Marlena assured him that she was there to try and help jog his memory, John Doe bid her stay.

During their discussion, John Doe relayed that he was attempting to make contact with the son he’d never seen before and that it was a dream that had led him to Salem. John Doe insisted that he’ll know his boy when he sees him and that they are both in desperate need of this reunion.

There were some other murky details. Something about a farm, but he’s fairly certain he’s not a farmer. Then again, he could be. Or he could be a chimney sweep or a street artist. Anything’s possible. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious and all that.

Marlena shared with John Doe that her husband is a private investigator and floated the idea of using him to get to the bottom of things. Later, John Doe shared the development with Kayla, and she crowed that if anybody can help, it’s John (Drake Hogestyn) and Steve (Stephen Nichols).

DAYS Recap: This Thing Called Love

In the town square, Abe (James Reynolds) confided in Steve that his date with Paulina the previous evening had been a complete and total disaster. She’d told him all about her plans for Price Town, and that had really rather clouded Abe’s judgment where his wife was concerned. He’s so sick and tired of being lied to. In fact, he’d rather be alone than be lied to again. How can he, and why should he fall in love all over again with a woman like Paulina?

That prompted Steve to call Abe a “self-righteous prig,” a truism which he promptly walked back for being too harsh. Abe then confessed to Steve that what it all boils down to is fear. He’s scared. Really, really scared. The truth is, Paulina gets to him, really, really gets to him, but he can’t remember anything about their life together. “Love is freakin’ scary,” assured Steve.

DOOL Recap: Setting The World To Right

Opposite this, Paulina begged Rafe (Galen Gering) to stop dragging his feet and return to the SPD as commissioner, but he retorted that he’d only come back if the fraternization policy was amended. He’s not about to stop seeing Jada. No way, no how.

Paulina bellowed that she was working to have said policy amended…she was just waiting on the city council to vote. And vote they would. Sometime. Hopefully, in the near future. But she needed a commissioner in the here and now.

Rafe dug in his heels…then he threw Jada’s name into the mix. Sure, why not? She’d make an excellent commissioner. The rub? Jada doesn’t want it either — not unless that policy is amended.

No sooner had Paulina begun to wonder if she was fighting a losing battle than a miracle happened: she was apprised that the council had agreed to amend the policy. And just like that, Rafe was back to doing his old job.

What’s more, he was delighted by Jada’s news that she was falling in love with him just as he was falling in love with her. Equally heartening was Abe’s decision to keep on trying with Paulina.

Days of our Lives Recap: The Best Of The Rest

Though it didn’t take much to convince Marlena that he was better off at home instead of in a hospital bed, Shawn (Brandon Beemer) had his work cut out for him where Belle (Martha Madison) was concerned — especially after he revealed he wanted to return to work ASAP. In the end, Belle resolved to be there for Shawn, whatever he needed and wanted.

Meanwhile, having had lunch with his dad — during which they groused over Philip’s (John-Paul Lavoisier) shenanigans and gave lip service to Victor and his passing — Brady (Eric Martsolf) planned to spend his day brooding over losing custody of Rachel (Finley Rose Slater). Instead, he was interrupted by a knock on the door. It was Theresa who had come to check on him in his time of need.
