As viewers of Chad And Abby In Paris — the DOOL App series — know Days of Our Lives fan favorite Austin Reed is back on the scene. How did his return to the story canvas come about? And what does it mean for Chad and Abby?
Austin (Austin Peck) is feeling quite lost these days, following his split from Carrie (Christie Clarke). Since then, he’s traveled to Paris and looked up his old pal Abby (Kate Mansi), now wed to Chad (Billy Flynn).
“I love working with Billy and Kate,” Peck tells Soap Hub. “Austin doesn’t give a [darn] who Chad is. He sees Chad and says, ‘You’re a DiMera. How much damage have you and your whole flipping family done to everybody in Salem?’ That’s the way I played it. I had a lot of fun.”
As for Abby, Peck says Austin may be seeing her in a new light now that he and Carrie are on the outs. “Austin is heartbroken and pissed off,” the actor says. “I would say he’s also lost, and anybody who’s lost is trying to find something. Abby fell for Austin in the past. That kind of attention is something he’s [now] narcissistically thinking about.”
Peck says the DOOL App series goes more in-depth with character development over plot. While there are no announced plans for him to return to the broadcast series, Peck says he’s open for that – and more App series appearances, too – especially if Austin’s written the way he’s been lately.
“Austin’s a complex character. He’s struggling with his own dark side and humanity, which every single human being does. He’s ultimately a person who wants to do good and do right.”
Peck says he’d love to explore on-screen Austin and Carrie’s current status. “There’s a part of me that, as Austin, wants to say to Carrie, ‘Really? Rafe? You go back for Caroline’s memorial and you [have sex with] Rafe? Really?’”
The actor applauds DAYS’ decision to look toward the future of how viewers will watch TV in creating the DOOL App.
“The thing that impressed me the most when I met with Greg Meng [co-executive producer, DAYS, who spearheaded the DOOL App] when I came to L.A. was that he’s so fired up about the app. He was very excited and when you’re in that place, you can’t go wrong.
“The writing is on the wall for every single person involved in any kind of storytelling on TV. If you don’t evolve within the industry and the way the landscape is changing, you’re going to die. Take that to the bank!” Days of Our Lives airs weekdays on NBC. Check local listings for air times. To download the DOOL App, click here.
