Nicole and EJ seem to be stuck in a bit of a time loop on Days of our Lives. On the Monday, June 3 episode, Leo was way off on his discussion of how many babies are swapped each year. As John McLane, a.k.a. Bruce Willis, couldn’t help wondering in Die Hard 2, “How can the same thing happen to the same guy twice?” We’re wondering the same thing about Mr. and Mrs. DiMera. What are the odds? Let’s count the odds!
Back in 2008, Nicole (Arianne Zucker) was married to EJ (Daniel Feuerriegel). He married her because she was pregnant with his baby. He was actually still in love with Sami (Alison Sweeney). EJ knew it. Sami knew it. Nicole knew it. That’s why she was so freaked out when she miscarried. Not only did she lose the child that she’d long wanted, but the child was the thing keeping EJ chained to his bride.
Luckily — for Nicole — Sami was also pregnant with EJ’s baby. (Though she was lying and claiming it was Rafe’s [Galen Gering] offspring.) All Nicole had to do was switch Sami’s newborn girl with… a random baby she got… somewhere. (Maybe the same place where The Young and the Restless gets theirs.) Sami’s baby died, and eventually, little Sydney was returned to her true parents, Sami and EJ. What are the odds the same thing would happen to Nicole, only this time, she was the bereaved mother?
EJ was the cuckolded father when Nicole passed off Sydney as hers and his. Now, he’s the one pulling the big con, as he lets Nicole think Jude is EJ’s — and not Eric’s (Greg Vaughan), who also happens to be Sami’s twin, making this full circle indeed. What are the odds he’d be the lied to and the liar all within the span of fifteen years or so?
According to the DNA Diagnostics Center, of the up to 500,000 babies born each year in the United States, only 18 may be switched at birth, and most of them are caught immediately following the incident. This means the odds of one baby switch happening to one couple is 3.6 in every 100,000 births. The odds of it happening twice to the same parents is: 1.296e-9. Which is to say less than zero. Much, much, much less than zero. So what are the odds? The odds are very, very slim.
