It’s been a bittersweet time on Days of Our Lives. Just as John succumbed to his wounds and died, Bo recovered from his coma. He was dying of sepsis, but John saved the miracle cure just before the meth lab he was in exploded, at the cost of his own life. This incredible storyline is bringing Bo back together with his friend, and John’s lady love, Marlena. Peter Reckell discussed his real-life connection with Marlena’s Deidre Hall.

Their Connection Was Immediate

Salemites are paying their final respects to John Black, who was killed off after portrayer Drake Hogestyn passed away. Hogestyn had a say in how John would ride off into the great beyond. When Bo woke up, his family didn’t immediately tell him that his friend died, but now he knows. And as a result, Bo goes to the funeral and has a face-to-face with Marlena.

Reckell explained to Soap Opera Digest that Bo arrived just as everyone was exiting John’s funeral, and went up to Marlena. He stated that in that moment, they only had “Two sentences, and it’s just us looking at each other. And, as always with her, the connection is immediate and deep and powerful.”

The Writers Did Well

Reckell remarked that he and Hall locked gazes, and he could clearly see the pain in her eyes. The actor recalled a scene that he and Hall did in 1984, when Roman had seemingly died and Bo had to break the news to Marlena. “That connection with the two of us has always been there,” he stated, adding “since the first time I met her [in our first scene together] and I gave her a kiss.”

Reckell explained that Bo felt guilty because John died saving his life and wanted to share his eternal gratitude with Marlena. He remarked that John didn’t just save his life, but also countless others, because he recovered the cure for sepsis called Versavix. “So the character of John went out a hero. I think the writers did a good job with that.”
