From 1986 to 1990, Steve and Kayla were a Days of Our Lives supercouple. That is, until Lawrence Alamain planted a bomb on a boat intended to kill Bo. Steve survived, so Lawrence poisoned him, and he seemingly died. He turned up alive in 2006, but forces would constantly try to pull the couple apart over the years. It’s 36 years later, and they remain a supercouple. Their portrayers recently opened up about which one of their wild stories they liked best.
Phenomenal Acting
Stephen Nichols (Steve) and Mary Beth Evans (Kayla) spoke to Soap Opera Digest about some great moments in Steve and Kayla’s decades-long relationship. Nichols recalled the story in which the villain Harper (Joseph Campanella) attacked Kayla, causing her to go deaf. After an attempted surgery to restore her hearing, she also became mute. Nichols came across a scene where Peggy (Peggy Reyna) was teaching Kayla American Sign Language – aka ASL – and stated, “She teaches Kayla the sign for courage.”
When Kayla was to be released from the hospital, she refused to go, and Nichols praised Evans’ acting as her alter ego struggled with this new disability. “Mind you, she cannot speak. She cannot hear,” he explained, adding, “But the acting this woman does is just phenomenal…It made me cry. It made me pine for those days like you can’t believe.”

What’s Good for the Goose
As the actors began recalling the storyline, Nichols explained that when Steve and Kayla returned home, they went to the roof of their apartment building. He played the song “Lady in Red” by Chris de Burgh, which was a call back to when the characters previously danced to that tune. He continued, directing his comment to Evans: “And I write on a little pad of paper ‘Lady in Red,’ and I show you.” To help Kayla’s recovery, they did the courage sign in that scene.
Nichols also remembered the previous scene where they danced to the song, and Evans got “Goosed on the pool table.” She giggled as she remembered him picking her up and putting her on the pool table, bumping the corner, which felt like she’d been goosed. The actors have such great chemistry, which shines through in their characters, and we’re looking forward to many more decades with Steve and Kayla!
