Linsey Godfrey (Sarah, Days of our Lives; ex-Caroline, The Bold and the Beautiful) is opening up about something she finds “very scary” to talk about, yet she’s bravely forging forward and doing it anyway: her mental health issues.
Linsey Godfrey Opens Up
“Stop scrolling. Let’s talk about mental health,” the actress instructed in a recent and powerful Instagram video. “So I’m what’s called a Borderpolar, which means that I have Bipolar 2 and Borderline Personality Disorder. Bipolar is a mood disorder, and Borderline Personality Disorder is a personality disorder.
Getting Candid
“It’s very scary to talk about this publicly, because of the stigma around mental health, particularly those two disorders,” Godfrey continued, candidly, delving into exactly what both entail. “Under those disorders, I have bipolar depression, anxiety, and OCD [obsessive-compulsive disorder]. And mostly what that means is that I have a tougher time regulating my emotions.
“With Bipolar I can experience something called hyper mania or severe depression, and that can last for days or weeks,” Godfrey explained. “With Borderline I can have those kinds of switches within hours of one another in the same day. But through working with a psychiatrist, daily medication, and weekly therapy, my disorders are very manageable for me. I am very grateful for my medication.”
The Reason Why
Godfrey noted that she had a strong purpose for coming out about something so personal and for putting it all out there in such an exposing video. “My main reason for making this is to let you know that you’re not alone, and it’s much more common than we know,” she said. “We need to destigmatize mental health.”
Next to her revealing video, Godfrey also posted an equally open message to her 135,000 followers. “I’m genuinely terrified to speak publicly about this but I think it’s more important than my fears to talk about it. Mental health issues are so much more common than we realize.
“There is such a terrible stigma around those of us that may deal with mental health disorders,” she continued. “We aren’t broken, we aren’t unhinged, our brains just work differently. We aren’t any less deserving of love. We aren’t any less capable of being anything that a person without these or any other disorders can be. It’s time to destigmatize mental health and stop dehumanizing mental health sufferers. You’re not alone. I’m here.”
Godfrey has been playing Sarah on Days of our Lives since July of 2018.
She made her daytime debut as Caroline Spencer on The Bold and the Beautiful in 2012, a character that also made a brief appearance on The Young and the Restless in 2014. Days of our Lives airs weekdays on NBC. Check your local listing for air times.
