After months of talking about her, Sydney DiMera has debuted on Days of our Lives. The daughter of EJ and Sami showed up in Monte Carlo, much to the surprise of Philip and Gabi. In true soap fashion, Sydney has been aged, so it’s time for a little refresher on the character that was last seen in Salem as a preteen.
Key Takeaways
- Sydney was part of a major baby switch storyline.
- The character is forging her own path, separate from Sami and EJ.
- Sydney Malakeh has stepped into the role of Sydney DiMera.
The Beginning of Sydney DiMera
Back in 2009, Sami (Alison Sweeney) learned she was pregnant with EJ’s (then James Scott) child. On her way to tell him, Sami saw a murder and ended up in witness protection, where she met Rafe (Galen Gering).
Meanwhile, in Salem, Nicole (Arianne Zucker) was also pregnant with EJ’s child. Unfortunately, she lost the baby. Nicole met a pregnant girl named Mia (Taylor Spreitler), who agreed to let Nicole adopt her child.
When Nicole learned Sami was also pregnant, she tracked her down and blackmailed the doctor to swap Sami’s baby for Mia’s. Sadly, the baby Sami thought was her child, baby Grace, died, and Nicole began acting shady.
Rafe began to suspect the truth, but Nicole fled town first. Eventually, Nicole decided to come clean, only to have Sydney get kidnapped on their way back to Salem. Sydney was later found, which brought Sami and EJ together, and they agreed to get married.
On their wedding day, Rafe revealed EJ was behind Sydney’s kidnapping with help from Anna (Leann Hunley). Sami left EJ and reunited with Rafe. In 2014, when EJ was shot, Sydney left town with her mom to take care of her dad.
Sydney was last seen in 2021 in Days of Our Lives: A Very Salem Christmas as a preteen.
A Mixture of Her Parents
It was easy to see from the second Sydney, ran into Gabi (Cherie Jimenez) and Philip (John-Paul Lavoisier) in Monte Carlo that she was her own woman, not just EJ (Daniel Feuerriegel) and Sami’s daughter.
Gone was the little girl DAYS fans last saw, and in her place was a woman who resembled both of her troublemaking parents.
“She has, I think, equal parts of both Sami and EJ. Sydney’s a strong girl. She wants to forge her own path. She’s a leader. She has a big heart, and she wants to do good, and she wants to be loved. It’s been super fun to get to find her myself through the scripts,” Malakeh shared with TV Insider.
The DAYS fall preview revealed that some world-traveling characters return and shake things up in Salem. It sure looks like Sydney is one of them.
