Every so often, soap operas manage to snag a legendary actor to join the show, even if it’s for a brief time. Days of Our Lives had the good fortune to cast legendary performer Dick Van Dyke as Timothy Robicheaux, John Black’s long-lost father. As the entertainer approaches age 99, the icon proves he’s still got it. He appears in a music video with the band Coldplay. In it, he reminisces about his life and discusses his mortality.

He Can’t Stop Entertaining

The music video opens in Malibu, California, 2024. As we follow Van Dyke through a house, the band’s name, Coldplay, appears, followed by “Dick Van Dyke, b. 1925.” And then the song title, “All My Love,” appears. The venerable actor goes outside, where Coldplay frontman Chris Martin is seated at a piano, awaiting Van Dyke’s arrival. The entertainer suddenly asks, “Chris, shall we?”

As the song plays, we are treated to a bevy of photographs and memorabilia from Van Dyke’s storied career, which makes us think the video was probably shot in his house.

Van Dyke joins in singing briefly, joking about attempting to hear and sing the right key. The Mary Poppins star is then seen dancing barefoot in his suit, and he still has some sweet moves. In the middle of the video, Van Dyke shares memories of his wife and kids in their first California house. And in particular, his daughter Stacy appeared to him in dreams to comfort him when he felt depressed.

A Brave, Positive Attitude

On a less happy note, Van Dyke states at one point, “I’m acutely aware that I’m…you know…could go any day now. But I don’t know why it doesn’t concern me,” bravely adding, “I’m not afraid of it.” He expresses his gratitude at being lucky enough to have made a living doing what he would have done even if it wasn’t his job: “Play and act silly” for a living.

He was asked to close his eyes and contemplate the people who’ve meant something to him throughout his life. After briefly closing them, he remarks, “I’m too old for this. I’ll pass out and go to sleep. I’ll take a nap.” Clips of Van Dyke from the past are also shown parallel to his dancing in the video, and when the song is done, he is blown away by the fact that Martin created another one right on the spot.

Van Dyke sums up his calm feeling that he may not be on this mortal coil for much longer with, “I have that feeling, totally against anything intellectual, that I’m going to be all right.” (Go behind the DAYS scenes with Van Dyke.)
