Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes know more than a few things about being in love, both in real life and on soaps. The Days of our Lives duo have a site that shows past clips of their work on DAYS, along with current videos of them talking about what it takes to have a successful relationship.
Bill Hayes and Susan Seaforth Hayes Talk Love at First Sight
Known as Doug and Julie Williams to DAYS fans across the globe, the adorable pair sat down with Fox 11 reporter Amanda Salas, to chat about life, love, and Secrets of Soap Opera Lovers, their website. “We’ve so enjoyed laughing and sharing stories in these wonderful interviews about Secrets of Soap Opera Lovers,” they wrote on their Instagram account. “Amanda was a delight! #GoodDayLA.”
Asked if it was love at first sight when they began working together on DAYS in 1970, Bill said absolutely! It was the same for Susan, but she saw him long before they worked together in Salem. “It was love from a distance for me because I had watched [Bill] on television when I was a little kid,” Susan shared. “Then, I watched him in the theater when I was a teenager.”
Love At First Sight
When they met for real at DAYS, Susan says that it was indeed love at first sight — and something more, too! “He walked into the room [at DAYS] in those tight striped pants that he was wearing to rehearsal,” Susan recollects with a smile. “Yes, I’ll have to say it was a kind of love — if lust was a kind of love!”
Bill and Susan Seaforth Hayes were then asked if they celebrate their real-life wedding anniversary (which took place in 1974) or their TV/DAYS wedding (which took place in 1976), the couple replied, “Both!” A request for advice on staying in love and being romantic, Bill offered, “It’s important you give your lover an ‘I love you’ kiss in the morning every day and then, again, the last thing at night — every night.”
Bill and Susan Seaforth Hayes Words of Advice
“No matter what happens,” Susan says, “during the day, you know you’ve started it with love and support, and then, you end it with love and support.” Susan adds that one of her strategies in having a successful romance is to never gaze at Bill and ask, “What are you thinking?” It’s actually one of her “don’ts.” The DAYS vet notes, “There was never a guy who wanted to hear, ‘what are you thinking?’ I really believe it. They’re probably thinking about baseball game scores. Or the Rams. Or maybe the Lakers. But they’re probably not thinking about what you’re thinking about!”
