DAYS Star Susan Seaforth Hayes Interviews Co-Star Suzanne Rogers

In honor of Women’s History Month, Days of our Lives is paying tribute to many of the important women who have played a role in the show’s success. This week, Susan Seaforth Hayes, beloved as Julie Williams, interviewed castmate Suzanne Rogers, equally adored as Maggie Horton Kiriakis, about her background and five-decade run on the show.

The Days of our Lives Twitter page posted the video, available on YouTube, in its entirety. During their talk, the video showed old photos and clips, including Rogers’s first appearance on-screen with the late John Clarke (Mickey Horton going by amnesiac Marty Hanson at the time), in 1973, when Maggie was introduced as a farm girl, who had difficulty walking, living on the outskirts of Salem.

It also showed the wedding day of Mickey and Maggie which would happen the following year, a moment where Maggie would give up her crutches.

“Suzanne was one of the first new characters to come on the show that was coming from the outside world with a whole different background. She had a whole aura of innocence, untouchability, and beauty, which added a big dimension to the show,” Hayes said, before going into Rogers’s history.

Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Rogers had dreams of being a Radio City Rockette, and viewers were treated to clips of her dancing —- which landed her that dream job, chosen as one of three dancers hired out of 71 applying. As a Rockette, she was making 25 cents a show, so the dancers went on strike.

From there, she went to Broadway and eventually landed the gig on Days of our Lives.

Rogers thanks Hayes’s mother, the late Elizabeth Harrower, for writing the scene which earned her a Daytime Emmy Award in 1979, after the character dealt with the death of her daughter. The two discussed the most important women on the show and brought up names like Frances Reid (Alice) and writer Pat Falken Smith.

“I think we all owe the ladies who came before us in this business a debt of gratitude,” Hayes said.

“We have had some of the strongest women characters on DAYS than any of the other soaps,” Rogers added. The two actresses will soon switch places with Rogers interviewing Hayes. Stay tuned!
