Days of our Lives star Paul Telfer, who plays Xander Cook, was all smiles on Sunday night, June 12, 2022, as he accompanied his wife, Carmen Cusack, to the Tony Awards in New York City — and they had a very good reason for being there.
It was a long journey for Cusack, who was all set to open in Flying Over Sunset in March of 2020 when Broadway shut down thanks to the coronavirus pandemic. In fact, Broadway shows went dark days before Hollywood sets like the DAYS set went dark.
However, when Broadway reopened last fall, Cusack was a hit in this new musical about a strange meeting between three famous figures — Aldous Huxley, Carey Grant, and Clare Booth Luce — that is all part of a hallucination. The musical was composed by Tom Kitt with lyrics by Michael Korie.
Cusack was such a hit in Flying Over Sunset that she earned herself her second Tony nomination for Best Actress in a Musical, with her first being in 2016 for Bright Star. While Cusack didn’t ultimately win, with the statuette going to Joaquina Kalukango for her work in Paradise Square, Telfer celebrated the night through social media, while also remembering what happened the day of the Tony Awards six years ago.
When Cusack and Telfer were ready to attend the Tonys in 2016, a tragic occurrence took place, the mass shooting at Florida’s Pulse nightclub. Telfer retweeted what he tweeted that night, as they dedicated the Tonys to the victims.
“I’m Carmen’s plus 1 tonight at the Tonys. She’s worked incredibly hard to be where she is today,” Telfer wrote that night, adding, “Tonight’s ceremony will be dedicated to the victims and family affected by the heinous crimes in Florida.”
Last night, Telfer remembered what happened during his wife’s first Tony nod, but also celebrated her second, tweeting a video of himself and Cusack in their limo on the way to the event, writing, “Off we go.”
During the awards presentation, DAYS Head Writer Ron Carlivati tweeted a photo of his TV screen with Telfer beaming in the audience, saying, “Who knew Xander was such a theater lover?” Telfer himself responded with a retweet, noting, “Maybe it’s time to bring some theatre to Salem.”
