Gloria Loring, after a nearly 40-year absence, is returning to Days of our Lives. Deidre Hall, who plays Marlena, announced the news today during her appearance today on The Locher Room. It’s likely that Loring will come home to Salem to help pay tribute to Doug Williams, played by the late, great Bill Hayes.
DAYS had more supercouples on the show in the 1980s than some shows have throughout the entire run. Among them were Neil (Joe Gallison) and Liz. The couple had to battle Liz’s ex, Tony (Thaao Penghlis), Carlos’s (Don Diamont; now, Bill on Bold and the Beautiful) passion for Liz, and Neil’s feelings for Marie (Lanna Saunders) as they traveled the path to true love. Prior to falling for Neil, Liz had a brief love affair with and marriage to Don Craig (the late Jed Allan).
After Doug and Julie (Susan Seaforth Hayes) left town in 1984, Doug’s Place was left without an owner. So, Neil bought the nightclub and renamed if Blondie’s after Liz. The venue was a special place for Neil and Liz. When Tony forbade to let Liz tell Neil that she still loved him, she’d sing “Always on My Mind” to Neil, which let the audience — and hopefully, Neil, too — know that she still cared for him deeply.
Gloria Loring is known for singing the theme song to The Facts of Life. In 1986, she scored a No. 1 hit on the Adult Contemporary chart and No. 2 on the Pop chart with the duet “Friends and Lovers” with Carl Anderson. The duo performed the song on the show, too. Since exiting DAYS in 1986, she has focused primarily on her music.
Stayed tuned for other returnees to DAYS to be announced in the near future.
