Those were the Days Of Our Lives! Remember Stefano’s midnight balls? Marlena possessed by the devil? Rex and Cassie arriving during a meteor shower? Virtual Eden — complete with Austin in a loin-cloth?
Salem seems pretty staid these days in comparison, doesn’t it? Are fans itching for a return to the years of supernatural happenings? We looked into our crystal ball for the answer. And then we listened to close to 9,000 voters.
The Real
Reality is dramatic enough, thank you very much, 80% of the audience advises. Marlena (Deidre Hall) and her glowing, yellow eyes were fun for a lark, but, long term, you’d rather watch her and John (Drake Hogestyn) canoodle and discuss their very troubled grandchildren than see her cutting a swath of destruction through Salem again — only for all the victims to show up hanging out on a weird island together
For folks who want science fiction, there are plenty of serialized space operas available to scratch that itch. You want to keep your soaps realistic, with heretofore unknown twins, formulas to return lost memories, and beloved faves back from the dad about as out there as it gets.
Reality Bites
Those were the glory days, a minority 20% of you sigh. DAYS was the talk of the soap world. Its success even paved the way for the complete craziness that was Passions. It would be nice to see some of that again.
With the supernatural, you never knew exactly what would happen next, and isn’t that the hallmark of a good soap? Reality-based stories are predictable and have been done to death. But throw the devil into the mix and who knows what might happen. Maybe Claire (Olivia Rose Keegan) was actually possessed? Wouldn’t that explain a lot? Days of our Lives (DOOL) airs weekdays on NBC.
