Patrick Muldoon played good guy Austin Reed on Days of Our Lives back in the 1990s, and again from 2010 to 2012. Now, he’s playing another good guy in the time travel movie Timecrafters: The Treasure of Pirate’s Cove!
The daytime vet is bringing to life the character of Jackson Dare, a fearless sailor who has (presumably) lost his life at sea, leaving behind a wife Victoria, played by The Bold and the Beautiful’s Denise Richards (Shauna) and their son, Josh (Casey Simpson).
Working with Richards again was like slipping into a comfortable pair of slippers. “Denise and I have been friends for years,” Muldoon tells Soap Hub. “We met in acting class before I joined DAYS. Our families are tight. Our careers mirrored each other in a way and we are helpful to one another. I was able to give her the 411 on what she was in for when she was cast on B&B. I know she loves being on that show.”
Acting in Timecrafters reunites Muldoon not only with Richards, but also the film’s director, Rick Spalla, whom Muldoon was roommates with in college. “I love the movie Time Bandits and this movie reminds me of that,” he says. “This movie is fun with the kids discovering the treasure in modern times. You’ve got pirates, time travel, and Denise Richards – how can you lose?”
Muldoon’s character, Jackson, gets lost in time after he discovers a portal in time and isn’t able to get back to his own time. “I’m fascinated with vortex stuff, the Bermuda Triangle,” he says, adding, “They found a way to weave all that into a fun, family movie.”
Does Muldoon believe in time travel? “I can’t say, ‘no,’” he responds. “I can say, ‘I don’t know.’ (Laughs) That’s sometimes the most-wise thing you can say! We’re still learning a lot.”
The film shot in Mendocino, California, which doubled for Florida, the movie’s locale. “Being California born and bred, I’ve spent a lot of time up there,” Muldoon says. “It was spectacular, really gorgeous.”
The film also stars Eric Balfour (Pistol) and Malcolm McDowell, who appeared in the classic time travel film Time After Time. “His being in the movie gives it such gravitas,” Muldoon enthuses. “He plays the heavy.”
Muldoon adds that the film has a real “warmth and heart” to it. It also provided him an opportunity to play a very physical role. “We had this pirate ship set that was built,” the actor shares. “I remember a funny moment while we were shooting. I’m fighting pirates and I suggested doing this karate kick against an evil pirate. Eric looks at me and says, ‘Bro. This is not that movie.’ Eric and I have a shorthand…I said, ‘Right.’ So, my character punches the guy and he falls off the boat!”
