First, Sonny confessed to murdering Deimos, although he didn’t actually remember stabbing his nefarious uncle. Now, Sonny has a key memory that could change everything. His portrayer, Freddie Smith, spoke exclusively with Soap Hub about it.
“Sonny came in super noble wanting to confess,” recalls Smith. “He really hated Deimos [Vincent Irizarry]… That’s one of his first impressions. He also remembers standing over his dead body. So he thinks –it had to have been me.”
Seeking Clarity
But the reality is Sonny doesn’t know for sure, and “he wants clarity to what actually happened,” notes Smith. “He needs to bring back the full memory of what went on, because he’s only been seeing pieces of that night.”
So when Marlena (Deidre Hall) arrives as the police station and offers to hypnotize Sonny, he agrees to do it. And so the process gets underway in the interrogation room.
A Major Memory
“Sonny starts talking about the night of the murder,” recounts Smith. “He’s going through what he’s already told everyone, when he has this moment. There’s a shift, and he remember something new… something big.
“He remembers moving Deimos’s dead body with Chad [Billy Flynn], which makes the situation worse.
Feeling Guilty
“When you already think you’re guilty and then you remember moving a dead body…” continues Smith. “It makes Sonny feel even more guilty.”
And with good reason. “Sonny hated Deimos so much,” explains Smith. “He remembers standing over the body, and there was a knife in it. He remembers moving the body. The only thing he doesn’t remember is the moment of pushing the knife into Deimos’s chest and actually killing him.”
The evidence is circumstantial, “and that’s what Paul [Christopher Sean] and Sonny’s dad [Justin, actor Wally Kurth] are holding onto,” says Smith. “They’re both like, ‘But you don’t remember actually doing it.’ Yet, to Sonny, it all seems very bad.”
