Last September Days of Our Lives fans prepared for a Salem re-birth just in time for the soap’s 50th anniversary. Instead, what we got was Salem death…after death…after death.
Let’s just say if you want to give a soap new life, maybe the idea of kicking off the re-birth with a serial killer story should be scrapped on the writers’ room floor the second it’s pitched. Yes, the story was riveting and the performances were Emmy-worthy, but it began a string of Salem deaths and ushered a dark cloud over the town that has yet to lift.
Between grieving for Paige and Will ; Bo’s untimely 24-hour tumor; Hope shooting Stefano; Abby burning Ben in the bed (after he tried burning her and Chad in another bed); Eric’s descent into alcoholism; Daniel’s death on New Year’s Eve; Jennifer’s pill addiction; Abby’s madness and alleged death; a crazed old man in a dungeon known as Yo Ling (who just so happened to be John’s father); a teen killing a grown woman; and another teen raping his stepsister (on Alice Horton’s couch), it all became too much. Please. Make it stop.
One week from today, Days of Our Lives Reboot 2016 begins, and all we can do is hope we can smile…maybe…one day.
From what we know now, rather than killing half of Salem, many who have left Salem return–including beloved characters. It starts this week with Laura Horton (Jaime Lyn Bauer). We also soon expect to see Valerie Grant (now there’s a blast from the distant past) and Anna DiMera (Leann Hunley) as well as Shane (Charles Shaughnessy), Kimberly (Patsy Pease), and Eve Donovan (Kassie DePaiva).
Of course, we also get a trio of villains we likely don’t need since the trio of Andre (Thaao Penghlis), Aiden (Daniel Cosgrove), and Deimos (Vincent Irizarry) is enough. But, villains will arrive no matter what in the form of Clyde, Xander, and Orpheus. Two left during last year’s reboot, and one DAYS fans likely forgot about since we haven’t seen him in decades. We also know Theresa will be leaving us, but that was actress Jen Lilley’s decision. Hopefully, she doesn’t die in some gruesome manner a la Will Horton.
[relbar link=”http://soaphub.wpengine.com/days-of-our-lives/days-of-our-lives-deimos-choose-chloe/” text=”Would Deimos Choose Chloe if He Learns She’s Pregnant?”]During the excitement of the serial killer story, Days of Our Lives ratings took off. However, as soon as that was wrapped up, reality set in and we realized Salem had now turned into an unrecognizable place. A never-before-heard-of Kiriakis brother and some SORAS’d teens took over the show, while that Dark Cloud took residence over Salem–to seemingly never leave.
Here is our 2016 prayers to the Soap Gods. May that cloud lift next week. May the skies turn blue, the sun come out, and let there be life in Salem again. We can’t afford to lose another soap. Amen.
