Marie Horton, daughter of the late Tom and Alice Horton, became a nun after falling in love with her own brother on Days of our Lives. She’s since left the convent but wouldn’t Marie be the ideal person to return to Salem to help rid the town of the Devil?
As veteran DAYS fans recall, Marie (Maree Cheatham) fell for Dr. Mark Brooks, who’d undergone plastic surgery before coming to Salem. She later learned that Mark was actually her presumed dead brother Tommy (John Lupton)! Angst-ridden over falling for her own sibling, Marie left the country and became a missionary worker in Africa.
Years later, Maree, a nun, returned to Salem and rekindled her relationship with morally bankrupt Alex Marshall (Quinn Redeker). The two had had an affair years earlier, resulting in the birth of their daughter Jessica (Jean Bruce Scott). Marie is also the grandmother of the late Nick (Blake Berris), Jessica’s son.
Marie was last seen in Salem in 2010 when she came home for her late mother Alice’s (Frances Reid) funeral. She’s no longer a nun, however, Marie has likely not forgotten her studies and the vows she took of poverty, chastity, and obedience.
Days of our Lives viewers know that Father Eric (Greg Vaughan) is on his way back to Salem, presumably to help his possessed mother Marlena (Deidre Hall). Perhaps, Marie could also return to Salem and help Eric go head to head against Satan. Remember when John Black (Drake Hogestyn) took on the Devil? He had help from his sidekick Father Francis (Eric Christmas).
We’ve no doubt that Cheatham’s Marie would be able to hold her own against MarDevil. The actress has played many memorable characters on soaps including Search for Tomorrow’s Stephanie Wyatt, the irrepressible Aunt Charlene on General Hospital, and grifter Mary Robeson on Knots Landing.
DAYS excels at utilizing its rich history when telling current stories. Characters may leave Salem but they never stay away forever. We can’t think of a better time than now to have Marie Horton show up and help her loved ones beat the forces of evil. In addition to her background as a nun, Marie’s also a nurse — so she’d be an asset in medical stories, too! We’ve seen on occasion Marie’s ornament pop up on the Horton family Christmas tree. Maybe now Marie herself should come back to Days of our Lives.
