It’s been 25 years since Adam Caine was first introduced as Edmund Phineas Crumb on Days of our Lives. The British gentleman was living in England when he met wacky Susan Banks and quickly got wrapped up in her complicated battle with Kristen DiMera.
Days of our Lives Edmund Crumb
Now he’s back and will cross paths with Harris (Steve Burton) and Ava (Tamara Braun), as the pair search for the missing Susan (Stacy Haiduk). Here’s a refresher course on the character.
The DAYS Entrance
Edmund Phineas Crumb first surfaced in England in 1998. John (Drake Hogestyn) had arranged for Susan and her son, Elvis, to relocate overseas to protect them from Kristen. After meeting Violet Crumb, the owner of a local pub, Susan was introduced to her son, Edmund, and the couple were instantly smitten.
Foiled By Kristen
Unfortunately, Kristen discovered Susan’s whereabouts when she saw a photo of Susan and Edmund standing up for Jonsey and Vivian at their wedding in London. On the day Edmund was out looking to buy an engagement ring for Susan, she received a phone call from Kristen. The vile DiMera revealed that she’d kidnapped Sister Mary Moira and demanded that Susan fly home with baby Elvis or else she would murder the nun. Before Susan left, her sister, Penelope, surfaced. Upon learning of Susan’s plight, Penelope decided to help her and they both flew to Salem together.
Suddenly Not Susan
Susan had met with Kristen, who drugged her and was furious to learn Susan had left Elvis in England. Soon Edmund arrived in Salem with Violet and Elvis in tow. Edmund ended up confronting a soused Penelope, thinking she was Kristen, and knocked her into a swimming pool. Rather than immediately rescuing her, he demanded she confess to her crimes and tell him where Susan was. When Penelope ended up dying, a panicked Edmund fled the scene. John and Marlena found the body, and Kristen was written off as dead. Kristen, however, was alive and had arranged for Susan to be sold into white slavery. Meanwhile, Kristen, posing as Susan, attempted to flee with baby Elvis. But John found her and brought her to the Penthouse Grill, where Edmund had arranged a surprise wedding. Not wanting to blow her cover, Kristen married Edmund.
The Truth Revealed
Eventually, Susan escaped and called Edmund to warn him about Kristen. However, Violet informed her that Edmund was off honeymooning with “Susan” in Bermuda. Susan hired a pilot, flew there, and exposed Kristen. In revenge, Susan arranged for Kristen to be sent back to The Supreme Leader’s island and be part of his harem. Edmund and Susan were finally reunited. The mystery of who had died in the pool was solved by Susan, who realized it had to have been her sister, Penelope. Edmund confessed that he’d let her die, believing she was Kristen. Susan realized it was an accident and, knowing Penelope was dying from an incurable disease, forgave Edmund. Susan and Edmund exchanged “I Do’s” on April 21, 1998. Years later, when Susan returned and was suddenly involved with Roger, no explanation was given as to why she and Edmund had divorced.
