Sister Mary Moira is back on Days of our Lives, and the writers and directors are doing everything they can to make her as annoying, abrasive, and inaccurate as possible. We realize that all of Stacy Haiduk’s (who, as usual, is giving her all to every single scene she’s in, so, kudos!) characters are supposed to be caricatures to some extent. Kristen DiMera is evil incarnate. Susan Banks is…kooky, to put it nicely. But those two women are just representing themselves. Sister Mary Moira is giving all nuns a bad name.
We can hear your protests now: Sister Mary Moira isn’t representing modern nuns, she’s supposed to be a throwback to the old, conservative, cloistered kind. You know, like from the 1950s…. Well, here’s the rub, though. We’ve been reading the collected letters of Oscar Hammerstein.
And while he and Richard Rodgers were working on the soon-to-be mega-hit, The Sound of Music, he corresponded with their technical advisor, a nun by the name of Sister Gregory. In the 1950s. And, guess what? She wanted to set the record straight about some professional details. And now we’d like to do the same.
Sister Mary Moira was spitting mad about how evil Nicole Walker Hernandez (Arianne Zucker) had lured Father Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan) from the priesthood. And while we agree that Nicole is evil, this isn’t one of her crimes. As Sister Gregory told Hammerstein, the church regularly urges their religious acolytes to reassess whether they are still committed to their calling, and, if they’re not, they are urged to return to secular life, where they can serve God the way they see fit. They are not screeched at and harangued.
The difference between nuns and sisters is that nuns take vows to withdraw from society and spend their days in contemplative prayer. Sisters are committed to going out into the community and doing good, whether it’s as teachers or nurses, or even farmers if that’s what is needed at the moment. Since the name is Sister Mary Moira, she should be someone familiar with the world. And someone who doesn’t judge those who live in it, sins and all.
Finally, nuns aren’t against sex, as Sister Mary Moira seems to be. They believe it’s vitally important to life, and don’t judge those who choose to leave the convent in order to get married. In fact, they bless it. Just because some choose to dedicate themselves to God, doesn’t mean they judge those who choose not to. Perhaps Sister Mary Moira needs a little refresher course on what her calling requires of her. And then shut up.
