Days of our Lives is about to deliver Nicole Walker a very big surprise when her ex-husband, Eric Brady, shows up in Salem ready to stay awhile. That’s not what she’s used to from Eric, and that is a very good reason to keep him at arm’s length at least for a little bit, but maybe even for good.
Sure, Eric Brady (Greg Vaughan) likes to believe he is pure as the driven snow, but what man would marry the woman he had been fighting to be with for more than 20 years just to take off to a village in Africa because someone there asked for his help about five days after he took his vows?
Could he at least have given it a month, six months, maybe a year? No, he got right on that plane, leaving a stunned Nicole (Arianne Zucker) feeling like she had whiplash. She finally married Eric, only to have him find something more important than her before she could blink.
Nicole did her best to wait patiently for Eric to return, but each time she thought she’d be picking him up at the airport, he suddenly had a reason why he couldn’t get on the plane. Needless to say, Nicole became frustrated as she waited to begin married life. She also got drunk. And slept with Xander Cook (Paul Telfer) one night. It may have not been her best move, but at this point, Eric had been gone nearly a year.
Of course, Eric would surprise Nicole with a visit for their first anniversary. He may have missed the first year of marriage, but he couldn’t miss that anniversary. Still, he wasn’t going to be able to stay long. Nicole was thrilled to see him and was determined he wouldn’t learn what she did with Xander. But of course, Eric learned the truth at his anniversary party, thanks to his meddling twin, Sami Brady DiMera (Alison Sweeney). Eric was outraged. Nicole was apologetic, but then Nicole was not.
Nicole was actually furious and finally let her feelings out after a full year. Eric was not there for her and they had just gotten married. That wasn’t the way it was supposed to work, so yes, she did something dumb, yes, she still loved Eric, but no, if he finds his work in Africa more important, maybe they shouldn’t be married. Nicole sent Eric packing…but now he’s back.
The problem is Nicole still loves Eric. And while her romance with Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering) is a snooze fest, she can do better than both of these men. Why take back a man who couldn’t respect you enough to be present during your first year of marriage?
Nicole needs to remember what she told Eric on their anniversary night. She needs to come first and Eric didn’t put her first. It will be tempting for Nicole since she will always love him, but Eric has proven time and time again that he may not be the man she was meant to be with.
