When Lindsay Arnold debuted as Alice Caroline “Allie” Horton on Days of our Lives, viewers hoping for a mini-Sami Brady in training were disappointed. A pregnant Allie whined whenever anyone asked about her baby’s father, threw tantrums when her parents suggested she might want to make some plans for the future, then put a button on the unpopular story by accusing an innocent man of rape and, when it turned out he wasn’t the culprit, as he’d claimed all along, still played victim.
It didn’t help Allie’s popularity in Salem when, for her next act, she accepted Tripp Johnson’s (Lucas Adams) – yeah, the same guy she’d accused of rape falsely earlier – marriage proposal…right after she cheated on him with best pal, Chanel Dupree (Raven Bowens).
Some of us were ready to wash our hands of her then and there, but, then, the Devil got into her…literally. Just as Allie realized that her brother, Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman) was possessed, the Dark Angel lept out of him into her…and things really got interesting.
Allie is so much more watchable as the Devil, taunting Johnny, kidnapping Ben Weston (Robert Scott Wilson), and manipulating Ciara Brady Weston (Victoria Konefal) than she ever was as perennial complainer Allie, who needed to be validated at every turn. And, Lindsay Arnold is killing it as the demonic bad girl.
If this is what the actress is capable of when she’s allowed to play anyone other than a put-upon victim, then we can’t wait to see what happens once the Devil is finally exorcised from her, and Allie is allowed to follow in her mother’s footsteps as the Teen Who Terrorized Salem. Sami (Alison Sweeney) drove the storyline for decades. It’s time for her Devil Daughter to step up and do the same!
