Wasn’t it awfully convenient on Days of our Lives when Allie Horton needed to rush down to the Salem precinct to visit jailbird girlfriend Chanel Dupree, and Alex Kiriakis offered to watch her toddler, Henry? And then, wouldn’t you know it, Stephanie Johnson just happened to drop by and catch Alex being all adorable and domestic.
Aww…we admit that the puppet show was cute. We certainly enjoyed it more than the obviously indifferent tot playing Henry did. But it all just felt so fake and staged and inorganic. We believe that Alex (Robert Scott Wilson) is good with kids. We just wish it had been set up a little better.
Would it have killed the writers to give Alex a throwaway line about how he used to always babysit Ari Horton when they all lived in Arizona together? Or, even better, have a scene of the two of them, where Ari raves about her favorite uncle, and we even got to see them interact so that his ease with Henry didn’t seem so out of nowhere?
Alex got to deliver a soliloquy to Stephanie (Abigail Klein) about how his biological mother, Anjelica Deveraux, gave up on love after she lost Justin Kiriakis (Wally Kurth). So he just decided to follow in her footsteps. He mentioned Justin and Adrianne Kiriakis (Judi Evans) having it all while Angelica floundered.
Why not add another layer to Alex’s experience taking care of kids by having him mention that, not being Adrienne’s biological child, he was always worried she’d reject him, so he tried to ingratiate himself into the household by taking care of his younger brothers, Joe, Vic, and Sonny? The show obviously wants us to love and sympathize with Alex. So let’s put a little effort into building that!
