A Critic’s Review Of DAYS: Irony And Missed Opportunity

The author’s opinions on DAYS are his and his alone. They’re suitably scathing, fairly humorous, and normally bang on target.

When it comes to Days of our Lives, every fan has their own opinion –- and Soap Hub is no different. For five days, we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review and a cheeky critique of the Days of our Lives week that was.

Days of our Lives: The Critic’s POV

The drama emanating from Sloan’s (Jessica Serfaty) no good, very bad deed continued to dominate the narrative this week and culminated, pretty predictably, with Nicole (Arianne Zucker) absconding with the child. Her child. Irony of ironies.

And though there were some diversions, the vast majority weren’t exactly welcome. The Tate/Holly/Johnny/Chanel quad irks by virtue of Johnny’s (Carson Boatman) obtuse refusal to see the obvious. The Stefan and Ava forced to peddle narcotics story continues to frustrate with its sketchy plotting.

Stephanie (Abigail Klein) and Harris’s (Steve Burton) hookup came out of left field and flew in the face of everything we know about Mr. Michaels. (As if he’s ever been presented as the kind who’d get blackout drunk and sleep with an acquaintance.)

Meanwhile, I have had my fill of Brady (Eric Martsolf) and Theresa’s (Emily O’Brien) squabbling, thank you very much. It’s not in the least bit entertaining — Blake and Alexis Carrington they are not — and quite frankly, it makes Brady come off as looking really rather abusive. And not for nothing, but couldn’t Tate (Jamie Martin Mann) have just given Brady the name of his pediatrician and saved the trio the hassle?

As for Xander (Paul Telfer) and Sarah (Linsey Godfrey) and their maybe reunion…well, I’ve made myself pretty clear where I stand on that subject. That granted, I did get a kick out of the former going to John (Drake Hogestyn) for advice.

Further DAYS Musings

* Given that the news of the assignation was printed in a well-read gossip column, why was Alex (Robert Scott Wilson) surprised that Chad (Billy Flynn) knew all about his threesome with Allie and Chanel (Raven Bowens)?

On the subject of the two men, what a missed opportunity not picking back up where the show left off with them. Imagine Steve (Stephen Nichols) returning home to find the two raiding his beer and managing to do what passes for bonding.

* How thoughtful (and a bit unrealistic) of Kayla (Mary Beth Evans) to have kept that keychain that Jada’s (Elia Cantu) papa made Steve for the 16 years that he (Steve, not Marcus) was presumed dead.

* Now, I’m not trying to arbitrate someone else’s grief, but Nicole and EJ (Dan Feuerriegel) dumping “their” baby’s ashes into a planter right outside the mansion’s front door like it was fertilizer did give me serious pause.

* On the one hand, it was nice to hear Brady acknowledge that he is more of a teen terror than Tate could ever be. On the other, methinks the man seriously overcompensated by forking over his company credit card and insisting his son treat himself and his gal pal.

* The obvious aside (which was to simply move the plot along), why would Sloan patronize Sweet Bits? Surely, there’s another bakery in the town not run by a woman she despises.

* What’s that, Tripp (Lucas Adams)? Kids are resilient, huh? Says the man who nearly slit Kayla’s throat with a scalpel because she was mean to his mommy. Okay, okay, there was a little more to it than that, but still…
