There was no question that the Days of Our Lives (DOOL) new head writer Ron Carlivati had a herculean task ahead of him — cleaning up the mess left behind by his predecessor while also forging ahead with new stories to captivate us.
Today we saw the seeds of that work really hit its stride. Take that awful story of poor underage Joey (James Lastovic) killing evil Ava (Tamara Braun) — and then never having to pay for it! Sure, we hate seeing a legacy character carted off to jail but he did murder a woman!
So now Joey, whose conscience has plagued him for over a year, is finally going to admit to his crime and more than likely do the time. While we hate to lose a Johnson, the heartfelt scenes between him and his parents have been what great drama is all about.
One story that truly kicked off today was a bit more shocking. The pillar of the community, freaking Abe Carver (James Reynolds), a man who has served his town for decades by being a top cop and then the mayor, was arrested as Dario’s (Jordi Vilasuso) accomplice.
SAY WHAT!?!? How on earth could Hope Brady (Kristian Alfonso) and Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering), who owe most of their success in their careers to him, arrest Abe simply because Abe has heard about the hacking and decided to pay for things with cash??!
There has to be a reasonable explanation for what happened, and Abe tried to give it to them – but no one was really listening. While at first this seems like a horrible story, it’s actually genius. FINALLY Reynolds is getting to be front and center in a story of his own!
Will it reunite Abe with Roman (Josh Taylor), who will have to be dragged out of retirement, and out from behind his family’s bar, to ride to his former partner’s side to find a way to clear him when no one else will? We can only hope!
And what about Hope? Will she realize this doesn’t pass the smell test and go rogue again? Could it upset Rafe that they’re on opposite sides and finally give that terminally boring couple some spark again? Who knows but at least we have “hope” again for Salem!
