After weeks of confused and conflicted feelings, Chabby fans are getting their wish on Days of Our Lives (DOOL). Or so they think…
I Do, Take Two
Chad (Billy Flynn) and Abigail are ready to renew their wedding vows on Days of Our Lives.
However, the supercouple’s attempt to re-cement their relationship ends dramatically, when the bride stops the ceremony.
“I feel like I’ve been so ready for this moment for months,” declares Marci Miller (Abigail). “I’ve been so ready for Abby to have a backbone and reclaim her life… really decide what she wants and what she deserves. I was excited to play it.”
A Rash Decision
Abigail, of course, was the one who suggested the vow renewal to Chad. “It was kind of a rash decision that came off of a conversation she had with Andre [Thaao Penghlis],” recounts Miller.
“He told her, ‘You need to do whatever you can to remind Chad that you’re the love of his life. Make this man understand that you’re the one he needs to be with.’ That’s why Abby brought up the idea of the vow renewal in the first place, but she was skeptical.”
Feeling Insecure
When the big day arrives, Abby is filled with insecurities. She talks things out with Jennifer (Melissa Reeves), JJ (Casey Moss) and Andre, admitting she’s concerned that Chad loves Gabi (Camila Banus) more than her. And the trio all attempt to reassure her.
“They all believe that Chad and Abby belong together and want them to make their marriage work” says Miller. “They’ve all been continuously nudging Abby in that direction.”
Abby Deserves Better
As a result, Miller believes “it’s a really huge thing for Abby to stop and go against all these people who have been so important and so crucial in her life over the course of the last few months.
She just says, ‘No. I don’t care what you say. This is what I want. More than that, it’s what I need.’ And Abby deserves to have that.”
Finally, it’s time for the ceremony to begin and family and friends –Jennifer, JJ, Andre, Kate and young Thomas – gather in the DiMera living room.
“Abby is in her dress. She walks into the room. Chad is saying his vows,” sets up Miller. “Abby gets all the way there.”
The Moment of Truth
Then, something hits her. “It’s this overwhelming sense of, This isn’t right,” explains Miller. “I don’t think Abby feels good in that moment.
Even though Chad is saying these beautiful things to her, she feels that there’s a sense of falsehood in it, because she knows how he feels about Gabi.
And it hasn’t been that long since he told her about those feelings.
And, from Abby’s perspective, “It doesn’t feel good to stand in the way of two people who want to be together,” adds Miller.
“Even if someone makes a conscious choice to be with you, if he wants to be with the other girl and the other girl wasn’t to be with him… That just feels like junk!”

Heartbreaking Confrontation
So Abby decides to stop the ceremony. “It’s kind of an awkward moment,” remembers Miller. “Abby says, ‘Can I have moment alone with my husband?
Everyone leaves, and it’s just Chad and Abby alone together. Billy and I have a series of really lovely heartbreaking scenes. I think they’re my favorite scenes that we’ve done since I’ve been on the show.
“Abby eventually says, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I’m not doing this for you. I’m doing it for me,’” continues Miller. “It’s really all about Abby’s self empowerment and what she deserves. It’s, ‘I deserve better than this.’ Then, she leaves.”
Chad is understandably shocked and heartbroken. “He never wanted to hurt Abby,” notes Miller. “He wants to be in love with her and go back to the way things were between them, but his heart and his brain aren’t letting him do that.
The beautiful, unfortunate thing is that Chad is a good man. He has been open and honest with Abby, and because of that she knows that he has these deep feelings for another woman.”
Moving On…
What’s next for Chad and Abby? Miller notes that Abby’s plan is “a separation;” albeit, “there’s no long-term decision made” regarding the couple’s marriage.
“This needs to happen,” emphasizes Miller. “The whole thing needs to be broken. It’s just been run over so many times. They need to break it all the way, so they can rebuild it.”
Not only is it a major turning point for Chad and Abby, but also Miller’s portrayal of Abby. “I think so,” she says. “Abby goes out and gets a job. She gets her own place. She takes some real initiative for herself.”
