A Critic’s Review of Days of our Lives: Plot Holes And Praise

When it comes to Days of our Lives, every fan has their own opinion – and Soap Hub is no different. For five days we sat and watched the good, the bad, and everything in between, and now we offer you a handy review, and a cheeky critique, of the Days of our Lives week that was.

Days of our Lives: A Critic’s Week In Review

When it comes to Days of our Lives’ most recent spotlight episodes, the sum of their parts was much greater than their whole. What we got on Monday, was a beautiful tribute to Abe Carver (James Reynolds) and Lexie DiMera Carver’s oh-so-complicated love story, but a celebration of Abe’s life it wasn’t; that would have entailed a far deeper dive into the character’s rich history.

There is more to Abe – far more in fact – than his life with Lexie. He’s been involved with several eligible bachelorette’s – Nikki Wade, Valerie Grant, and Tamara Price, to name a few; in addition to Theo, he’s fathered Brandon Walker and served as a stable father figure for Nicole Walker Brady (Arianne Zucker); he’s lost a brother in the line of duty – and don’t get us started on the fact that no one remembers Jonah and Jett Carver.

And who could forget all those great cases that he and Roman Brady (then, Wayne Northrop; now, Josh Taylor) solved? (Speaking of, does Roman even know that his former partner was gunned down not but a few feet from the Brady Pub?

Likewise, Tony DiMera (Thaao Penghlis) and Anna DiMera’s (Leann Hunley) remembrance of a wedding past was cute and all, but it didn’t really speak to the couple’s actual journey together.

For the majority of the nearly 25 years that followed that ceremony, they were apart owning to Stefano and Emma Donovan’s machinations. And notice how neither one broached subjects like Tony’s initial reason for coming to Salem – which was to win back the affections of his alienated first wife, Liz Chandler – or his abject devotion to Renée DiMera, she who caused Anna to miscarry her and Tony’s baby…guess that all slipped their minds.

Still, Days of our Lives should be praised for honoring its beloved veterans – even if it does so in the smallest of ways. It’s not every soap opera that would take the time to do so.

Further DAYS Musings

* Best Keeping With Character Moment: How apropos of Julie Williams (Susan Seaforth Hayes) to sidestep the fact that Abe investigated her son, David Banning, for both attempted murder, and serial murder.

* Best Sport: Deidre Hall – for throwing on that female Devil costume – terrible wig and all – and rocking the *ahem* hell out of it.

* Biggest Tattle-tale: Johnny DiMera (Carson Boatman). Was it really necessary of him to throw Allie Horton (Lindsay Arnold) under the bus like that with MarDevil?

* Winner of the Stand By Your Man Award (AKA The Tammy Wynette Trophy): Gabi Hernandez DiMera (Camila Banus). Sure, she knows that Jake DiMera (Brandon Barash) isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer, but there’s no way that she’s going to let him rot in jail for a crime that he didn’t commit…especially when her brother’s own girlfriend got the ball rolling in the first place by plying Philip Kiriakis (Jay Kenneth Johnson) with a tissue of lies.
