Chris Chittell is an English actor who is best known for playing Eric Pollard on the soap opera Emmerdale. He also appeared in the Sidney Poitier film To Sir, with Love and the show The Tomorrow People.
Along with his work in film and television, Chittell has tried his hand at theater, appearing in a production of Macbeth. From where he was born and raised to marrying his Emmerdale co-star, here are five fast facts about the actor.
Chittell was born on May 19 in Aldershot, Hampshire. His father served in the Indian Army, so after Chittell finished school he planned on joining the Royal Navy. However, he decided to become a model instead and later pursued acting. His first acting job was in a production of The Royal Hunt of the Sun at the Chichester Festival Theatre.
Humble Beginnings
Pursuing a career in acting was Chittell’s dream, but it was not an easy one. He and his wife at the time lived in a mobile home and ran a gift shop in order to make ends meet while Chittell was off auditioning for roles. Sometimes he had to hitchhike part of the way to make it to auditions.
Soap Career
Chittell was cast as Eric Pollard in Emmerdale in the ‘80s, but he was only supposed to be on the show for 12 episodes. However, the viewers loved his role so the show offered him a six-month contract — which then turned into a 33-year run. He has been on Emmerdale longer than any other cast member.
The distinguished actor was awarded the Order of the British Empire Medal in 2019 for his service to drama and charity. This award is recognized by the Crown and honors people who have done great work in their respective fields.
Getting Personal With Chris Chittell
Chittell married his first wife, Caroline Hunt, in 1979, but they divorced in 2005. They have two children together. He later married his Emmerdale co-star, Lesley Dunlop, on June 18, 2016.
