The Los Angeles fashion scene coupled with the trials and tribulations of the rich Forrester family set the stage for the debut of The Bold and the Beautiful (BB) in 1987.
Here are the seven moments that defined the CBS soap.
Sweet Caroline
Although the star-crossed Caroline (Joanna Johnson) and Ridge (Ronn Moss) overcame an array of obstacles and finally exchanged wedding vows, their happiness was short-lived when Caroline died of leukemia in 1990. Her dying wish was for Ridge to reunite with Brooke (Katherine Kelly Lang).
Enter Massimo
Shipping magnate Massimo Marone’s (Joseph Mascolo) arrival in 2001 forever changed the dynamic of the Forresters. He was revealed to be Stephanie’s former college lover and Ridge’s biological father. Ridge was stunned to learn the truth.
The Mother Lode
A deep, dark secret from Stephanie’s childhood was revealed when Betty White debuted as her mother, Ann Douglas, in 2006. Ann had closed her eyes to the brutal beatings Stephanie had received from her father as a little girl. It immediately explained Stephanie’s tendency toward violent outbursts as an adult.
Saving His Sister
After accidentally shooting Katie (Heather Tom) and leaving her in critical condition, Storm (William deVry) made the ultimate sacrifice in 2008. He snuck into an empty hospital room, wrote a suicide note, and shot himself in the head so his heart could save his dying sister.
Farewell Stephanie
When actress Susan Flannery announced her retirement, Stephanie’s death was exquisitely scripted as the character succumbed to cancer in 2012. After a party was thrown in her honor and she said goodbye to her loved ones, Stephanie was left in nemesis-turned-friend Brooke’s care and died in her arms.
Ridge Redux
Ronn Moss also threw the soap a curve in 2012, when he said he, too, was leaving B&B after 25 years. Ridge was written off the show that September. However, in December 2013, the character resurfaced in the form of daytime vet Thorsten Kaye.
About Maya
The soap made history in 2015, when Rick’s (Jacob Young) love, Maya (Karla Mosley), confessed she’d been born a man; becoming the first regular transgender character in daytime. Rick accepted the woman he’d come to love and they eventually married.
