The Beyond the Gates recap for Thursday, March 13, sees Nicole get the spotlight at the ceremony where she receives the Distinguished Service Award in Psychiatry. The drama takes the form of a couple of heated conversations and a large, looming, disguised presence. One attendee made sure to shut Leslie’s revenge plans down.

What Happened On Beyond The Gates?

The evening Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix), Laura (Destiny Love), and Mona (Karan Kendrick) have been working on since day one of BTG was finally here. Only Laura was out of the picture after that inconvenient hit-and-run. Meanwhile, Mona was out sick. However, Eva (Ambyr Michelle) stepped in and got the job done in more ways than one.

Eva showed up at Nicole and Ted’s (Maurice Johnson) to see if they needed any last-minute help. Nicole let her assistant know that she was invited to the ceremony. Since she didn’t have a dress, Nicole also let Eva know that she could borrow one of Kat’s (Colby Muhammad) dresses. Eva must have felt like Cinderella invited to the ball.

Meanwhile, Dani (Karla Mosley), the emcee of the festivities, couldn’t keep her mind off of Bill (Timon Durrett) and Hayley’s (Marquita Goings) Italian honeymoon. She stalked their Insta, glaring at the photos, and practically had another meltdown. However, she kept things together and led a wonderful celebration of Nicole’s life and career.

The Crasher

Eva couldn’t believe her mother — disguised as her Sherry alter ego — crashed the ceremony as one of the beverage servers. It was Leslie’s (Trisha Mann-Grant) job to pour the champagne, wine, etc. However, she spent more of her time confronting Ted, sneaking a conversation with Nicole, and talking to Eva. Plus, she glared at Nicole, looking like she wanted her life. In fact, at one point, she dreamed of standing up at that podium with Ted while he received an award.

When Ted and Leslie clashed, Ted reminded Leslie that he had warned her to stay away from his wife. She responded, saying she thought about it for a minute, but ultimately, she decided that he didn’t get to tell her what to do. Ted said that Leslie better not do anything to mess up his wife’s evening. Leslie wondered what he’d do. “Destroy me,” she asked. “Been there. Survived that.” We need to know what went down between these two back in the day.

Vernon Warns Martin

Before Nicole received her award, there was time for another confrontation, this one between Martin (Brandon Claybon) and his esteemed grandfather, Vernon (Clifton Davis). Vernon wanted to know if Martin could really believe that he wouldn’t find out about his grandson’s interest in running for the next President of the United States. Vernon didn’t sound pleased.

However, Martin figured Vernon would be pleased. “Have you lost your ever-loving mind? ” the Dupree patriarch said forcefully. He questioned Martin’s thoughts and beliefs and wondered how he could ever entertain a run for such a high-profile position, considering the secret he was sitting on was beyond huge.

He explained that no candidate, especially a Black candidate, could withstand the fallout that would come from people learning that secret. So Martin’s secret has to be huge, especially since he has nightmares about it that prevent him from getting asleep. Later, Smitty (Mike Manning) inquired about the conversation, but Martin didn’t reveal what he and his grandfather really talked about.

Martin also didn’t tell his husband that he talked to somebody who had a lead on an investigative reporter job for Smitty. Instead, Martin shut it down and kept it to himself. His controlling side reared its ugly head again.

Sherry’s Been Handled

Dani emceed the evening for Nicole. Before Nicole stepped up to the podium, Dani said a few words about her sister. Vernon and Anita (Tamara Tunie) raved about their daughter as well. Then, it was Martin’s turn. Nicole finally received the award, and she brought up Ted and then her entire family as the crowd applauded.

Before “Sherry” could do anything, she was promptly fired and escorted out, and Eva was thanked for reporting Leslie’s unprofessional behavior. Clearly, Eva enjoyed being a part of the Duprees, so she didn’t want to see anything bring down Nicole’s day. Hence, she threw her mom under the bus.
