The first few weeks of a new soap are always a challenge, as viewers scramble to figure out who’s who, who is related to who, who is sleeping with who, and who hates who? But Beyond the Gates has given as another fun conundrum: Just how old is everyone supposed to be? We crunch the numbers to see what we can sus out:
Younger Than Springtime
Smitty (Mike Manning) said that his and Martin’s (Brandon Clayborn) son Tyrell (Jaden Lucas Miller) is 17, and their daughter, Samantha (Najah Jackson) is 16. Since both kids are adopted, let’s assume they didn’t come into the household as babies, but as pre-teens, which means Smitty and Martin could be in their early to mid-thirties. If Martin is planning to run for president, he has to be at least 35, or very close to that.

Step Up
So if Martin is 35-ish, that puts his parents into their mid to late 50s. Sure, they could have had him while they were in medical school, but Nicole (Daphnée Duplaix) said she met Ted (Maurice Johnson) at a medical conference in Hawaii. Which means they were already doctors. This suggests they would have only had Martin in their late 20, making their ages closer to 60.
Head of the Family
So how old does that make Anita (Tamara Tunie) and Vernon (Clifton Davis)? In their 80s? Davis is 79, so close enough. But Tunie is only 65, closer to what Nicole should be. Duplaix is 48. Clayborn is 36. How soapy!
Odd Girl Out
But there is one more wrinkle: Eva (Ambyr Michelle). Leslie (Trisha Mann-Grant) has sure made it sound like Ted left her for Nicole. Which should make Eva older than Martin. However, the writing suggests that Eva is the same age as Kat (Colby Muhammad). We suppose Ted and Nicole could have been “on a break,” Ted had an affair with Leslie, then reunited with Nicole and left Leslie for her. But if that’s not the scenario, then Martin has to be a lot younger than 35. Which means his plan to run for president… must be a long way off. What do you think of our math? Are we close?
