There is no shortage of naughty boys and girls on Beyond the Gates. There’s Bill, who dumped Dani for Hayley. There’s Hayley, who slept with her best friend’s married daddy. There’s Dani, who… is not taking it well. And then there’s Leslie, who ran Laura off the road on her motorcycle just so she could get Eva into Nicole and Ted’s house. But they’re all kind of run of the mill soap baddies. We’ve seen their types before. We know how to react. This villain, however, caught us off-guard. And we’re not sure how we’re supposed to feel about him.

Martin (Brandon Claybon), we are told, is the rising star of The Dupree family. He worships his grandpa Vernon (Clifton Davis), and dreams of following in his political footsteps. He admires his grandma Anita (Tamara Tunie). He is respectful to his parents, Nicole (Daphnee Duplaix) and Ted (Maurice Johnson), and sweet to his kid sister, Kat (Colby Muhammad). My Way or The Highway
Sure, Martin is a dream. As long as everything is going his way. He got very snippy when Grandpa Vernon suggested Martin had made a mistake, exploring the possibility of running for president without running it by his patriarch mentor first. And when Smitty suggested he was considering going back to work, well… good guy Martin suddenly wasn’t so good anymore. He flat out kaboshed a potential job offer. And then made it clear to Smitty that his only job was to stay at home, do the laundry, attend PTA meetings, and make sure Tyrell passed calculus. Was Martin going to step in and help his son out with his homework? Nah, that’s Smitty’s job.
