When news broke last week that Gina Tognoni had been let go from The Young and the Restless, fans were both shocked and devastated. Many said Tognoni had made the role her own over the last five years and couldn’t believe she was leaving.
Fans were also stunned that Michelle Stafford would be leaving General Hospital to reprise Phyllis, the role she originated in 1994.
Tognoni quickly thanked CBS and Sony Pictures Television after the news broke, remaining gracious and pragmatic about her departure.
Now, Tognoni is speaking out about her last days as Phyllis because it ain’t over yet. In fact, we’ll be seeing her version of Phyllis till at least late spring.
The actress says she still has a few more weeks of taping left, and with YR taping more than a month ahead, that puts Tognoni’s exit in about late May.
She also shared a picture of herself in her dressing room, saying it’s her “sanctuary” where she always feels “peaceful and centered.” She shared the following on Instagram:
“Here we go starting our journey walking in peace with my Phyllis’. Each day is precious to me here in LA. I am still giving life to this character for a few more episodes/weeks .. Filled with Love as We count down and continue our story in New ways. BTW this is my dressing room/ sanctuary. I always sit in here and feel peaceful and centered. It’s special.”
Currently, Phyllis is stirring up trouble in a totally Phyllis way. She got her daughter, Summer, of town and managed to convince Lola going for it with Kyle wouldn’t be a problem. Of course, she intends to catch it all on camera and blow up Abbott family lives. And, of course, this is for Summer’s greater good.
If YR had to replace Tognoni, at least they’re letting the Emmy-winning actress go out with a whopper of a story and there’s more to come.
The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
