Is The Young and the Restless Looking for a New Adam?

Today, The Young and the Restless put out a casting call for the role of ‘Dean.’ The character’s traits and qualities may — or may not — indicate that the show’s on the hunt for an actor to play Adam.

The actor currently playing the part, fan favorite Justin Hartley, is a series regular on This Is Us, a new NBC series set to debut on Tuesday, Oct. 20 at 10 p.m.

Torn Between Two Jobs
While some actors have been known to do double-duty in daytime and prime time, that usually occurs when the performer is doing shows on the same network. (For example, Victoria Rowell played, respectively, Dru and Amanda on The Young and the Restless and CBS’ Diagnosis Murder back in the ’90s.)

It’s not likely that Hartley will be able to do both shows given that they’re on competing networks.

Sound Familiar?
The part of Dean, per the breakdown, describes the role as “compelling, attractive, honest, and [having] a strong sense of ethics” and also says “when he is vulnerable, his love is intense and faithful” and that “if push comes to shove Dean will do the right thing.”

The qualities Y&R is looking for in this role don’t talk a lot about Adam’s ability to be under-handed. That’s a bit curious since Adam once caused Ashley to miscarry, lied to Sharon on numerous occasions, and conspired with Jack to set up his father to take a fall.

The breakdown also says, “Dean is his own man, who has always kept his instinctive ambition in check, (which also doesn’t sound like the Adam we love to loathe) and he knows “that greed has been the downfall of the people he’s grown up with. Ruthless ambition is not his thing.”

Of course, ambition certainly has been Adam’s “thing” in the past, so while this description doesn’t sound like a dead-ringer for Victor’s estranged offspring, it does describe the Adam that Hartley has played — one who is more compassionate and a romantic leading man.

The Young and the Restless doesn’t comment on casting rumors. The role of ‘Dean’ is described as a contract part, which begins shooting in September.
