Soap stars have been known to rub elbows with the West Coast elite as well as marry into Hollywood royalty, maintain deep and abiding friendships with famous actors, and some have even been tasked with guiding them through life’s trials and tribulations.
All of these actors are alums of long-gone daytime dramas such as Another World, As the World Turns, Guiding Light, Ryan’s Hope, and Search for Tomorrow. And all of them are known to Hollywood icon Christian Slater – he of Heathers and Mr. Robot fame. But only one of them was tasked with providing religious training for the beloved actor.
But who can that actor be? Was it Morgan Freeman (Dr. Roy Bingham, AW), Julianne Moore (ex-Frannie Hughes; ex-Sabrina Hughes, ATWT), Michael Zaslow (ex-Roger Thorpe, GL), Ilene Kristen (ex-Delia Ryan Coleridge, RH), or Kevin Bacon (ex-Todd Adamson, SEARCH)
Freeman and Slater have appeared in a number of the same feature films – including Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Hard Rain – and both had roles on Ryan’s Hope. However, that seems to be the extent of the actors’ associations.
Moore and Slater both appeared in Tales from the Darkside: The Movie (which served as the former’s big-screen debut). But this is the only time that the two superstars collaborated, and there was no familial or spiritual connection.
Had Slater continued to portray D.J. LaSalle on Ryan’s Hope, it’s probable that he and Kristen would have had many a scene together seeing as how her Delia was an in-law of Ryan Fenelli, the young woman with whom D.J. was smitten.
Eleven years (rather than six degrees) separate Bacon and Slater who co-starred in the legal thriller Murder in the First. But while the actors followed similar career trajectories – both found success in daytime dramas before making it big in the movies – that and their work together was the extent of their familiarity.
Zaslow and Slater both had roles in the Star Trek franchise – the former appeared in a pivotal part in the original series pilot episode and the latter had a small bit in the fifth feature film – and they shared a close relationship owing to Zaslow status as Slater’s godfather.
So, if you guessed that the soap star in question was Michael Zaslow, then you were absolutely correct!
