After nearly an episode of explaining how she doesn’t know who she is and what she wants, Mariah (Camryn Grimes) took the plunge and kissed Tessa (Cait Faribanks) on The Young and the Restless (YR).

This was a pretty big step for a show which, back in 1977, flirted with the idea of same sex romance by having lonely Kay (Jeanne Cooper) appear to be developing feelings for her roommate, Joanne.

Kay’s son, Brock, told Joanne about Kay’s presumed feelings, Joanne freaked out and that was pretty much the last we saw of her with Kay – or on the show.

(Fun fact for As the World Turns fans: Joanne’s philandering professor husband was played by Anthony Herrera, later best-known as the unkillable James Stenbeck.)

Here we are, exactly 40 years later, and YR is giving it another try. This time, no one has freaked out… yet. At least, on screen. But how do fans feel about the development? We heard from thousands of you about it:

We Saw It Coming
Soap fans are a savvy bunch when it comes to reading foreshadowing relationship clues, and 87% of you are proud to say you saw the kiss coming.

And not just because we speculated about it two weeks ago. Neither woman has seemed terribly into their particular relationship.

Mariah is always accusing Devon (Bryton James) of still having feelings for Hilary (Mishael Morgan), while Tessa keeps telling Noah (Robert Adamson) that she wants to take things slowly.

Meanwhile, the girls are spending more and more time together and having a blast. The only question remaining is whether it’s just an infatuation or the real deal?

Why-Nining
Just because the show seemed to be heading in that direction doesn’t mean they actually had to go there, point out 12% of the fans.

Why did they have to do this? What’s wrong with two women having a warm, close, nurturing, fulfilling friendship – without it turning sexual?

Soaps so rarely show a pair of girls just hanging out, having a great time, watching movies and having girl-talk. It was refreshing to see. Why ruin it with all this sexual tension now?
