He’s synonymous with The Young And The Restless and forever remembered as a beloved character from All My Children. And, now, Peter Bergman is celebrating something pretty special!
Bergman was born on June 11, 1953, which means he turns 66 years old today. The actor’s father, Walter, was a United States Navy officer stationed in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba at the time of Bergman’s birth.
After attending the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Bergman landed a role on a two-part episode of Kojak. Next, he read for the role of Dr. Jeff Martin on AMC. While he didn’t get that part, he was cast as Dr. Cliff Warner on the ABC soap.
Paired opposite Taylor Miller (Nina), the two became a supercouple and were wed four (!) times on-screen!
Bergman also made television history when he appeared in a Vicks Formula 44 cough syrup commercial as he immortalized the expression: “I’m not a doctor, but I play one on TV.”
The actor left the role of Cliff in 1989 as he and Miller’s Nina rode off into the sunset with their son Bobby. Bergman wasn’t on the market for long.
Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki) suggested to producers that he screentest for the role of Jack Abbott, which was being vacated by the late Terry Lester.
Bergman nailed the audition, won the role, and has gone on to win three Daytime Emmys for Outstanding Leading Actor In A Drama Series for his portrayal of the charismatic cosmetics executive who always tries to stay two steps ahead of his opponents.
Unlike actors who take breaks from the show and later return, Bergman has had an uninterrupted run in Genoa City since 1989. Off-screen, the actor is wed to wife Mariellen, and they have two children: son, Connor, and daughter, Clare.
Soap Hub joins Bergman’s family, friends, and fans in wishing the actor a happy birthday and many happy returns!
The Young And The Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
