The Young and the Restless recap for July 27-31, 2020, features a dip into the soap’s archives for a look back at some of the Newman family’s biggest moments.
Last week it was a five-day, five-episode marathon dedicated to some of the most asked for moments. This week, YR offered up some major happenings in the lives of the Newman family. And yes, Victor (Eric Braeden) was front and center.
Monday’s episode spotlighted Victoria (then-Heather Tom) and Nicholas (Joshua Morrow) – then the youngest members of the Newman clan. The former was still peeved that her adult magazine debut had (seemingly) been scuttled by her interfering husband, and the latter needed a quick lesson in kicking butt. And who else was he going to turn to but his boxing enthusiast father?
When you need to deliver shocking, uncomfortable or downright life-altering news avoid Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) like the plague – she’s more inclined to stand around and cry and tell the secret to the wrong person. Instead, turn to Abby Newman…especially if you can find her five-year-old self. Five-year-old Abby was very direct and to the point.
While Nikki and Ashely (Eileen Davidson) hemmed and hawed over how Victor would take the news that he was the girl’s natural father Abby just cut right to the chase and asked the man himself if he was aware of the fact. He wasn’t. And there would be hell to pay where the women in his life were concerned.
But he did try to be a good father to Abby…he didn’t try very hard, and he wasn’t ever really good at parenting (just ask Adam), but he did try.
Cassie Newman (Camryn Grimes) served as a beacon of light for her family. Though not biologically related, she was just as much as grandchild to Victor and Nikki as Noah ever was (though Nikki much preferred the little angel to call her by her Christian name – never grandma) and no matter the argument or the trying time, Cassie was always able to unite her loved ones.
So with her death came a void that was never really filled – not even by the appearance of Cassie’s heretofore unknown identical twin. Hey, when a dying Cassie promised that Sharon and Nick would eventually have another daughter she didn’t promise that she’d be the saint that the family was used to. Cassie could perform miracles, but she wasn’t perfect. And Sharon got two daughters — Faith and Mariah.
Thursday’s flashback episode put the sturm and drang on hold (for just a bit) and instead presented a happy day. If only someone could have told Victoria and J. T. (Thad Luckinbill) – that day’s prospective bride and groom – how very, very badly their relationship would deteriorate.
If there was one defining moment in the life of Victor Newman, it was his abandonment at an orphanage when he was seven years old. That experience shaped him into the (some would say ruthless) man that he has become today.
And he wanted to make sure that his father knew exactly what kind of man he was. Hence his visit to dying man and the cathartic release of decades of pent up rage. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings or airtimes.
