The Young and the Restless recap for June 29-July 3, 2020, features a dip into the soap’s archives and a look back at Paul and Christine’s long and winding road towards togetherness.
Last week, it was all about award-winning performances. This week, the spotlight shifted to one of YR’s most popular couples: Paul Williams (Doug Davidson) and Christine Blair (Lauralee Bell) – Genoa City’s foremost gumshoe and his judiciously-minded lover.
Christine and Paul haven’t exactly been winners in the ol’ love department. She thought she had found her Prince Charming in the form of her first husband Danny Romalotti (Michael Damian), but he wound up leaving her high and dry. He thought his marriage to Lauren (Tracey E. Bregman) would last till death did them part. It didn’t.
They found contentment with one another but neither was on the same page where their future was concerned. Paul wanted to get married. Christine wasn’t so sure. In fact, she found it nearly impossible to outright accept his proposal.
But, in the end, Christine caved. Perhaps it was because she looked inward and decided that she truly loved Paul. Or maybe Nina’s (Tricia Cast) proposed rude and lewd lingerie shower was the actual clincher. Who knows?
What is inescapably true, is the fact that Christine’s future monster-in-law, Mary Williams (Carolyn McCormick) was the only one who presented the bride-to-be with a practical gift – a four-slot toaster capable of crisping the bed in less than 30 seconds.
When planning a move to Genoa City, there are two rules that should be observed. Don’t betray Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) and don’t piss off Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford).
Phyllis may have mellowed over the past twenty-some years, but she is still the same woman who mowed Christine and Paul down on the eve of their wedding just because she feared that there was an off chance that Christine might start sniffing around Danny again.
Luckily, Christine and Paul emerged relatively unscathed from their unfortunate brush with Red’s rental car, though the hit and run did push the wedding date back an entire year. However, they finally did make it to the altar…and wound up divorcing just a few later.
And though they did eventually reunite, it didn’t happen before Paul married a certifiably insane young woman named Isabella – who bore him an equally-deranged son and who tried to end Christine’s life with the aid of sleeping pills and bathwater.
