Victor Newman has been on The Young and the Restless front burner for close to 40 years (not bad for a guy who was only supposed to cause trouble for a couple of weeks). But his last story was… playing dead.
Victor (Eric Braeden) faked his death. Then he turned his company over to daughter Victoria (Amelia Heinle). And resolved himself to a life of sedentary retirement with love of his life, Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott). Oh, also his terminal illness is all cured now. That’s not a story. Do fans want to see Victor front and center again? Here’s the word according to over 4,000 of you:
Forty years haven’t bred familiarity… or contempt, as 80% of the audience is still eager to find out what Victor will get up to next. Will he continue battling prodigal son, Adam (Mark Grossman)? Take his life’s work back from Victoria? Remind Nick (Joshua Morrow) what a disappointment he is? Cheat on Nikki… again?
Victor has kind of done everything (and everyone), so what’s left? You don’t care. Let Victor do the same thing over and over again. You’ll keep watching, no matter what!
You said it above, Victor has already done everything, and 20% of The Young and the Restless fans think it’s time for him to step aside and let the younger generation take over. Victoria is running Newman, Nick is forging his own path, Abby (Melissa Ordway) has a hotel to run, and Adam is… bad. They don’t need Victor watching over their shoulders, offering advice… or trying to stop them.
Soaps only have a finite number of stories and Victor has already played out all of them. If you’re going to be watching the same thing, you at least want different people in the lead roles. The Young and the Restless (YR) airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for airtimes.
