On the heels of The Bold and the Beautiful announcing their return to work last week (despite a brief pause that restarts tomorrow), now comes word that sister soap The Young and the Restless will also be returning to the set after shutting down in March due to the coronavirus pandemic.
According to Deadline, the soap has released word of an imminent return. “I hear the producers for the soap have sent a letter to the cast and crew, notifying them of a tentative plan to restart production on July 6,” the site reported.
Deadline goes on to report that the date listed in the letter is more of a goal than set in stone because as things tend to change quickly (like with BB), anything could still happen between now and July 6. But they also reveal that the producers of YR have been in contact with BB’s team and hopefully have learned of some pitfalls to look out for — especially when it comes to testing.
Both shows shut down production around mid-March when California issued a stay-at-home order. YR and BB tried to use classic episodes on Fridays to extend their stockpile of new shows but eventually, they ran out. While it’s unknown how quickly the show could turn around new episodes for air, chances are they will do whatever they can to make that happen as quickly as possible.
YR made its debut in 1973 and introduced more sexual undertones and younger characters to daytime soap operas. It has outlasted other soaps to become a mainstay for many households. Needless to say, four decades of storylines have kept viewers locked in and wanting more.
From Victor Newman’s (Eric Braeden) family machinations to Paul Williams’ (Doug Davidson) heroism to the adorable love story of Kyle (Michael Mealor) and Lola (Sasha Calle), YR knows how to entertain and keep fans coming back for more. Sadly, times are shifting and daytime soap operas are shrinking.
It is one of only four remaining soap operas currently on the air. The other three daytime dramas include General Hospital (GH), Days of our Lives (DAYS), and The Bold and the Beautiful (BB). YR airs weekdays on CBS. Check your local listings for air times.
