Melody Thomas Scott has played out some harrowing storylines on The Young and the Restless over the years as Nikki’s been kidnapped, shot, and endured other travails. In real life, the actress has gone through some horrific ordeals, too, as she reveals in her upcoming memoir, Always Young and Restless.
“I’m sure many people will be shocked to learn that I have that kind of background,” Scott tells the current issue of People magazine featuring former YR guest star Katy Perry (American Idol) on the cover. “They’ve seen me in their living room every day for 41 years, they believe I’m my character Nikki Newman and my life is perfect. But I think it will make it even more impactful for them to realize this kind of stuff can happen to anybody.”
Scott’s tome details years of abuse suffered from her late grandmother and also details incidents of sexual assault. “Even now, I think I’m healed,” she says, “I think I’m over it, but it never really leaves you.”
The Daytime Emmy nominee and fan-favorite survived the tough times thanks to her husband Edward Scott, supervising producer at The Bold and the Beautiful, and their three daughters: Jennifer, Alexandra, and Elizabeth. “I was always very strong and a fighter,” Scott adds.
In order to deal with the traumatic events in her life, Scott says she meditates and attends therapy. “There is no easy fix, but I’m hoping my story opens the doors for people,” she says.
Scott has played Nikki Reed Newman since 1979. Her pairing with Eric Braeden’s Victor Newman has led to one of daytime drama’s most enduring romances. Always Young and Restless is available on Tuesday, August 18. Scott is set to join Soap Hub Insider for a Fireside Chat on Monday, August 17 at 7 p.m. ET. Click here for the details. The Young and the Restless airs weekdays on CBS. Check local listings for air times.
